Hi, yeah those kits are a bit crap, not ideal for a beardie. Your BD will very quickly outgrow a 20 gallon tank and as you say, the bulbs are not good at all. Check this link, it will give you a better idea of what you need

You were right to ditch the sand, Petsmart need to be re-educated on the needs of bearded dragons, overall they are clueless.

I always recommend starting out with a larger enclosure with front opening doors, makes life much easier. At least 35 gallon size like 24x18x18 as a minimum. This will get you through the first 4 or 5 months, maybe longer depending on how fast your beardie grows. Better yet get their forever home up front, save you from buying 2 or 3 enclosures. A 55 gallon is fine for this. 36"x21"x17" like the ones dragons4you sells with inside lighting. They are easy to keep clean, have light fixtures built in, with front sliding doors. Also are light weight, easy to move around. You dont need to fill it up with stuff, a basking spot on one side, maybe a hammock on the other side with a hide and a climbing branch water and food bowls. No substrate needed.

The single most important thing to keep your beardie healthy is a clean dragon and enclosure. Get something that is easy to clean!
