Hi all! I'm a brand new member of this forum and would just like to share about my beardie and his setup.
I got Vegeta from a breeder and can't remember the exact age of my him but just sent an e-mail to the breeder asking for his age. I currently have him in a 10-gallon tank as he still very young. I have a log going up to one corner of the tank where he basks (at about 100-110*F about 7 inches away from the light), I have a small pool for him to drink out of or bath in and there a few logs on the cool side of the tank for him to lay on or hide under (he loves sleeping on these). The cool side is anywhere from 70-85*F and the warm side like I said above is about 100-110*F. I am unsure as to how exact these numbers are as I just recently discovered the thermometers I have now aren't too good at accurately display temperatures (will be switching to digital ones tomorrow). I have a hygrometer in the middle of the tank that ranges anywhere from 25-40% (I am not sure if this needs to be higher or lower but that is what it's been at). I have a UVB stretching across the length of the cage. The fixture is made for 3 lights; the UVB bulb, a day light/heat bulb and a night (red) light/heat bulb. The UVB and day light go on at 7 am and turn off at 8 pm. I don't always use the night light because I feel that it is too warm in the tank at night with it on, sometimes 80-85*F but when it is off the temperature is more like 75-80*F (I usually only turn the light on when I am showing him to someone or I just wanna have it on) which do you think is better?? I feed him gut-loaded crickets twice a day about 6-10 per feeding plus collared greens (about 7 small leaves) 2-3 times a day. I give him a bath in a 90*F tub 2-3 times a week and clean his cage every 3rd or 4th day. He is extremely active, loves to come out and play and absolutely loves to be petted. I just have a few questions....

Should I dust my crickets? And if so with what and how often? Reptivite with D3, Reptivite without D3, etc.
Should I use the night (red) light?
Do the lights need to be on longer then they are? Does the time of year affect my lighting schedule? (winter day lights on shorter, summer day lights on longer)
How often should I handle or allow my beardie to come out and run around?
At what point should I get him in a larger tank?
Are my temperatures where they should be?
Is my humidity right?

I will put pictures up of him and his enclosure tomorrow also with an age, size and weight.

Hi there !

Let's see if we can't answer those questions !

First off, you already know that 10 won't be enough for long.. Most of us suggest a 20 long to start out with, this way you have a warm side as well as a cool side. That 10 isn't large enough to provide that gradient.

The digi will give you the most accurate temps.. the stick on the side thermometers can be very inaccurate, like up to 20*F+/-.

No need for the night light.. dragons by large tend to do better without lights at night, in my opinion.

When you say clean every 3rd or 4th day.. does this mean deep clean? Bit more info please.

The uvb you are using.. if it is a tube uvb, then go with the D3.
Calcium once daily on insects 5 days a week, vitamins 2 days a week until 1 year of age..after that, calcium 1-2 times a week, vits 1 time...

Red isn't a good color for dragons...Bright white is good. No need, again for a night light.. If you want heat, should temps drop below 65*F then use a Heat Emitter...

Hours of light, 12-14 daily...
Yes, seasons will effect dragons.. though since yours is so young, you most likely won't see much change as of yet..
The coming out is pretty much a personal thing.. As long as the dragon has basking time of 1-2 hours after eating, and first thing in his morning to warm up.. You should be fine. It's the uvb that you want to be careful with.. if baby doesn't get enough uvb, then that can start all sorts of issues...

I would opt to the larger tank now.. This way you can get the lighting, uvb, therms and decorations set, and tested now, so as to avoid issues later.
A 40 Breeder is the smallest size enclosure proper for an adult dragon.. of course you can always build larger.. but a foot print of 3' long and 18" wide is enough.
I can't say your temps are fine, due to the thermometer you are currently using.. Let's see what they are when you get the digital in use.

Humidity appears to be just fine.

Can't wait for the pictures !
Hope this helps !

I will be posting pics very shortly.

To respond to your post....
Starting today I am going to be looking for 20-gallon longs on the internet and go to PetCo and see if they have any.

I will also be going to PetCo to get my new digital thermometers so I can check temps more accurately.

From now on I will not use the night light but I have heard that reptiles can't see red so the red light won't bother them. Although my temperatures seem fine at night so I won't use that night light unless I absolutely have to.

Every 3rd or 4th day I change out the paper towels and every other time I do this I clean his dish, logs and the walls of the tank thoroughly.

The UVB I am using is a tube UVB I believe 5.0 but I am not sure.

I will start dusting my crickets once a day, 5 days a week with ZooMed's Reptivite with D3. What kind of vitamins should I be using? What is a good brand?

You say that red isn't a good color for dragons but like I said above I heard that reptiles are blind to red light.

He gets plenty of basking time so I am not concerned about bringing him out. The tube UVB is 12 inches of above the floor of the tank and spreads across the entire tank, do you think this is sufficient UVB exposure?

Thanks again for all the help!! Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

A 10.0 is what you are looking for , in a tube for dragons... Space between tube and highest spot dragon will go is 8"...

There is a lot of inaccurate information out there.. Dragons do indeed see colors..

Herptivite also by Repcal is a good vitamin..

As for cleaning.. daily spot cleaning is good, I tend to do deep cleaning, where everything is removed, and cleaned, then clean every inch of the enclosure weekly.. I use either Vinegar or rubbing alcohol.. Neither leaves residues that can cause issues later..
I use paper plates to feed salads, and toss in the roaches.. This way I don't have to worry about bacteria building up on food bowls..
Hope this helps.

Cute little guy you have. The UVB tube you want is the reptiSUN 10.0, zilla and reptiGLO are known for causing eye issues.
What kind of cham do you have?

I have a 8 month old male panther chameleon named Cheech. That's him on the cage in the pic right in the middle of the door.

Just a money saver get your digital therm from an ace or a hardware store. Much cheaper thanpetco about 10 dollars.

Another money saver tip, skip looking for a 20 gal and go right to the 40 breeder. If the space is too much for your baby you can portion off the tank until he gets bigger.
