We just got our first beardie on Sunday, he is 1 year old according to the rescue, he is so sweet! We were going to give him a few days to settle in, but he was at the glass looking like he wanted to come out already yesterday afternoon so we've been taking him out to explore/chill a few times now.

This afternoon he has been scratching at walls and head bobbing at the glass, it seems like he wants to come out, but he just wants to explore the whole time so I cant keep an eye on him while I work! Am I interpreting this behavior correctly, or does he need/want something other than company? He is in a 4x2x2 with 2 hides and plenty of places to climb.

My other question is about his veggies. The rescue said he had lots of bugs on Sunday before we picked him up. Yesterday he only ate 2 pieces of mustard greens I hand fed him and maybe 5ish pieces of bell pepper, he didn't seem interested in the butternut squash. Today he didn't want any of the things I tried to hand feed him, but he did make a stop and take maybe 3-4 bites out of his salad bowl. He happily ate all 15 medium dubias i gave him. I am guessing he may just be used to getting more bugs. I plan to give him bugs 2 days a week, salad 5 days and 2 days with no food. I just wanted to make sure that just sticking to my schedule and trying to get him used to it is the best way to get him eating more veggies or if there is something else I should be doing to make sure he is getting enough food if he's not eating many veggies.

He has a 36 inch t5 10.0 uvb inside the enclosure, his basking spot is about 103 and cool side about 83, so I think the UVB and heat are ok...

He is going thru relocation stress- please feed him everyday - he needs salads every day and insects 2-3 times per week - the head bobbing is part of the mating ritual- the bobbing is a sign of dominance- I can post a nutrition website for you-- the T 5 is a good bulb the distance should be 12-15 inches directly above the basking decor-

May we see his home? Does he have a blankie in one of his hides? (They love soft things its weird) if you can leave him in his tank Up to a month that will help him calm down, some bearded dragons go through relocation stress some dont, it may take time, just be there talk to him hand feed him :) try and keep handling to a minimum, you dont want to take him out when he’s being naughty, take him out when he exhibits behavior you want, they are smarter than you think, you can tame them to a certain extent.

Ok!

This is his set up.

We took him out to you watch tv with us yesterday afternoon and he snuggled up and fell asleep on my chest.

At what point would we know when it's ok to start taking him out and interacting?

Very Nice home :) is that a basking bulb? It looks like a regular household bulb to me, id give him a whole 2 weeks, if he’s still acting like this something else could be stressing him, thats nice that hes cuddling you guys though! It sounds likes he’d rather be with you than in his home. I know its hard cause hes so cute but if you can keep handling down to a minimum that’ll help him acclimate.

The bulb your using for basking what is it? Is it keeping temps 95-110 taken w/ a digital probe thermometer? I see no thermometers at all? Are you using a IR gun? I would invest in some digital probe thermometers as well

Yeah it's a 100 watt bulb, using an IR the basking spot is at 103
