Hi everyone. We’ve had our leatherback beardie Taco for about a week and a half. He’s about 3-4 months old. We’ve always had pets, dogs and fish, but this is our first reptile. We’ve done some research but are still learning a lot as we go. Right now we have him (or her) set up in a 20 gallon tank that’s about 24”L and 20”H. I recently picked up a 30”Lx12”H that we’ll get set up this weekend. We have a 75W heat lamp and a 30” Reptisun T10 UVB on top of the tank with a wire mesh cover.

Taco eats about 8 mealworms a day and we offer veggies and dust the worms every other day. We’re also soaking him at least every other day. I know the mealworms are no good but I’m waiting for a delivery of 1/4” dubia roaches and medium nitro grubs to arrive. I think we’re doing everything right, he’s pooping at least twice a day, has already shed once and he seems pretty active when we take him out of the tank. Though his tail goes dark which I think is a sign of stress? Anyway, just want to introduce ourselves and say thank you for providing this forum. A couple of questions:
1. How do I store the Dubias and grubs? I don’t want to breed them. How many 1/4” dubias should he eat?
2. Seeing that Taco is just getting used to the tank he’s in, should we wait to put him in the larger one? He has to climb up to the top to bask and I’d like him lower to the ground so he can be more active.
Thanks again for creating this site and all the useful info on it.

Welcome to the forum :) taco is super cute, Id wait a little bit before you do another change, its good you have the correct light!! That is the most important thing, yes his tail and belly darkening can signs of stress, they also darken to absorb heat, its kinda hard to tell with baby’s, you can keep the roaches in a tall tub with a lid, offer them fresh veggies (romaine lettuce, potatoes, carrots) idk about the grubs tbh, I would maybe lower the hammock a couple inches, it looks a little close in my opinion.

Taco is adorable -- I would get your decor lowered -- hes too high up and if he jumps hes gonna get hurt and they do jump when babies --- what kind of UVB are you using? brand and bulb please -- we need to get that UVB corrected for distance and placement depending on the bulb --- I am assuming your getting the basking temp w/ your digital probe off the hammock correct? Those hammocks have been known to cause toe and leg injuries -- if he jumps and his nail is caught in the mesh he will get hurt -- if you want to keep the hammock I would invest in a cloth or fleece one-- you can find them on www.papmeredbeardies.com or www.etsy.com search bearded dragons -- you want your basking temps 105-110 for him till hes about a 5-6 months old then they should drop to 95-100 -- so in order to keep him eating we need to get the lighting situated
