Hi! I am new (but have been reading everything I can for a couple of weeks) and this is my first post here. I have 2 daughters, ages 8 and 11. They have been asking for a reptile for over a year and I have wanted one since I was 7 or 8. So, I decided that we would look into what it takes to have a reptile for a pet. The girls (with a little steering from me) narrowed down what reptile they want to two: a bearded dragon and a corn snake. The bearded dragon has a bit of a lead on the snake. We went to a reptile show where they got to hold some reptiles and ask questions. I have told them that they need to do research and create a care manual of sorts. My oldest did that 3 years ago for hermit crabs and we have 4 very happy hermit crabs that have been with us for 3 years now. In the meantime, I am doing my own research. The dragon will be theirs in name, and they will help with it, but as the adult, I realize that I am ultimately the one responsible for giving him/her a healthy, safe, loving home. I have many questions but will post in the appropriate sub-forums.

In addition to our 4 hermit crabs, we also have 2 cats and 1 dog.

Welcome to the forum! happy to hear that you've been doing some research beforehand. Beardies are great critters and they love attention. A few of us have put together a ton of info for 1st timers on general care.. You will find links under several of our comments that will take you to the general care section where the info is. We also love questions so ask whatever lots of knowledge here to help.

Welcome!! I hope y'all get the beardy. They are great pets for kids. I have two little children as well who love their beardy. If I could suggest, if u get a beardy look into getting a juvenile and not a baby. The babies are scared and will bite for a couple of months while they get use to humans. Your daughters won't be able to handle it tell it got older and more passive. :)

A friendly warm welcome to you.

I have both a dragon and a corn snake and will say both are great. However if I were to recommend one for children (without both being a choice of course lol) I'd say go with the bearded dragon. They are much more hands on with the care they require and will really intrigued children more in my honest opinion. My bearded dragon interacts with me much more than my corn snake does. In his eyes I'm only good for food lol.

With the dragon just monitor them with it of course while it's a baby. Maybe keep handling at a minimum until the beardie matures and gets use to all of you. Keep us posted, we all love to see and share pictures so once you get him or her feel free to share :)
