So many of my friends know that Joshua my oldest just got accepted to Iowa State University (full scholarship & stipend) as an English Lit major for his Masters/PhD program. Well anyways, tonight he went to a dinner at UMass and had no idea, but this is what he received.

What a wonderful happenstance.. Congratulations to Joshua! And I'm sure a hearty pat on the back for Mom and Dad, who helped him form the habits that paid off !

Thanks guys. This is such a great accomplishment for him. This is a kid who all during high school prepped to go to art school. He was going to Boston Art Institute (amazing artist). Anyways 6 months before graduation he said "mom, not sure I want to use my art for school". So instead of paying $50,000 a year for art school I insisted he go to the local community college ($5,000 a year). Within 2 months he decided on English Lit. That is where it all started. So, yes, we are very proud!!!!! I do wish though that he would start drawing again.

You know, that is such a smart move. When I grew up (kind of), I always thought it would have been wise to do the 1st two years of college at a community college - cheaper and the classes aren't really major focused. And then finish the last 2 at a university. that is if you are on the 4 year plan, which I wasn't. lol...

Anyway, are you celebrating his accomplishment?

That's exactly what my twins are doing....starting this fall. Getting their two-year degree in Computer Graphics (with main focus being digital photography). If they want to continue on from there to get their four-year degrees, credits will transfer.

Hey Renee...Joshua isn't the "center of attraction" type of guy. I didn't have a party. When he finished his Bachelor's we got the whole family together and got a room at a restaurant. Was only about 20 of us, but it was his type of party. He enjoyed it.

Chances are right before he leaves in August, we will do the same thing to say good bye.

It is amazing the difference in cost between a community and a state school. No reason (other than if you are going to be a doctor or something) to start at a community and get the cores out of the way. Then transfer for the real important things.

The best thing about this whole thing, is he will get his Masters and PhD paid for, plus $12,000 a year for living expenses. Kind of takes the worry out of the whole school experience.

I can appreciate that and it would be up my alley to have a small gathering at a nice restaurant. I call that a celebration!

College costs have escalated ridiculously. That is awesome that he has received what he did. All his hard work has paid off.
