Ok well most of you know the story of my unexpected visitor on Sunday which was interesting enough. Yesterday the dog was being extremely hyper and knocked me on my rear so hard I couldn't sit (and still can't) and walking was hard. Then my hubby and I were laying in bed watching some BBC (James May's Toy Stories = awesome show) when all of a sudden we got a whiff of something that smelled like an electrical short/fire. We searched the house and outside looking for the source of the smell and couldn't find anything. Eventually the smell went away and we thought it was from someone else's apartment since we all share the same exhaust tube. Then the smell came back even stronger so I hobbled around the apartment unplugging everything while my hubby shut the circut breaker down. This time we asked our neighbors if they smelled anything and they said no. We had our one neighbor who we've gotten to be friends with come in the apartment and the smell just punched you in the face. At this point we called the fire dept (it was 9:00 pm) and they came and pretty much stayed 2 hours just as puzzled as us as to where the smell was coming from. Despite all of our electronics plugged in, everything was safe and nothing was overloaded. They checked the internal wall temps to see if there was a fire in the wall and nothing was there. One good thing did come out of all of this though, they fixed our stove/oven! Our energy company couldn't even fix it but they did lol. So finally around midnight after all of the neighbors were done cursing us for waking them up we went to bed.

Was it the stove that was causing the smell?

What a worrisome situation. Do you feel confident that it wasn't your apartment or are you still somewhat worried?

It definitely wasn't the stove. We have had issues with the stove and a gas leak and that was taken care of shortly after we moved in. What we smelled was definitely without a shadow of a doubt electrical but where it came from I don't know. The smell is gone today and with everything on it still hasn't come back. I think it may have been either a smell from outside that was being brought in from our central air unit or from someone else in the complex.

We got it all covered. It's 2 animals per person in the house so my hubby would get the dog and Magellan and I would get Frank and the cat god forbid something happened.

Eventually I will have 2 more reptiles in the house so it will be a little more difficult but I always have spare bins to put everyone in, in case of an emergency. Luckily our apartment is 2 flights from the front exit (7 flights from the back exit) so it doesn't take long to get out and we aren't that high up in the front too

Update! Well my hubby and I had our best friend over for the night the 12th into the 13th and we all woke up to the burning smell again. It was worse than before but at least this time we narrowed it down to the kitchen and even better one section of the kitchen. We couldn't figure it out so we decided to pull the fridge all the way out this time unlike what the fire dept did. We still couldn't pinpoint the smell's origin. We tripped all the circuits and waited for the smell to go away. Then one by one we turned them on until we got to the fridge. We turned the breaker back on for the fridge and the smell punched us in the face. Turns out one of the wires on the back of the fridge going to the compressor was shorting out and was about to catch fire. We called our landlady to let her know the situation and she went and bought us a new $500 fridge! By law she is not responsible for replacing the appliances that go bad and she just spent $10,000 on a new AC unit for us too. Ever since we got the new fridge the smell has been gone and I am extremely thankful to have such an amazing and sweet landlandy. My husband and I are going to buy her a card and send her some money as a thank you because she bends over backwards for us when she doesn't have to.

Oh wow! I am so glad that you found out what it was, before something bad happened. And your landlord does sound great!
I know you are relieved and be able to sleep better now that you know what it was, and it is fixed.
