my 3 years old female bearded dragon passed away… i’m so devastated. i feel so guilty even though i always took care of her better than I did myself, or anything. she was everything to me…
she constantly had parasites problems, since she was 2 years old… i lost count of how many times she had to take antiparasitics, antibiotics, and injectable anti-inflammatories.
She get better, I sterilized her terrarium so she wouldn’t get reinfected, she ate good-quality greens and insects… but months later, the parasites always came back. She had to undergo spaying surgery due to follicular stasis, but everything went fine. And now, we don’t even know the cause of her death.
It all started when she had an ultrasound, and the images showed a mass in her intestines. Surgery was performed to remove the abscess, and the surgeon got worried when he opened her abdominal cavity and saw that her intestines were severely thickened. Still, he removed the mass, which also meant removing part of her intestine because it was nearly obstructed. She was responding well post-op — eating recovery food, passed a good stool, was on anti-inflammatories… she was discharged and came home. The next day, she started excreting blood from her cloaca, though not a large amount, so we went back to the clinic. She needed an urgent blood transfusion — her hematocrit levels were very low. The transfusion helped, and she improved within hours. But the next day, it was back to square one — her hematocrit was low again, with no visible active bleeding. She went into cardiac arrest. We’re still waiting for the results from the mass they removed, but I don’t have the heart to do a necropsy on her little body.
She was so well cared for… so loved. She had a large terrarium, calcium supplements, UVB lighting, heating, sunbaths, water baths for hydration, fresh greens… I miss her so much. Life was so unfair to her. has
anyone gone through something similar?
