I don't know about words I know they know actions though. I use a plastic Solo cup to dust my feeders, when I come up the stairs shaking that cup Dolly goes crazy because she knows that there is food in that cup
Jus got my beardie stubbs this Saturday, love him, he's really cool, however I live in another state and leaving him at my girlfriends house when I go back home. I left him there cause I'm eventually moving in with her. My question is will he remember me if I keep going back and forth every two weeks .
Bayne knows his name. You can be talking or even talking to him and he will completely ignore you until you say his name, then he will look right at you. When I ask Bayne if he is hungry or wants to eat, he gets excited and starts running around his enclosure but every time I've fed him since I've gotten him, before I feed him I ask him one of the two - so he's most likely associated those words with eating. I don't know if every beardie is like that, but Bayne has picked up on a few different things like that. I think it all depends on how much you work with them and how much time you spend with them. I'm with Bayne almost all day everyday because I have a liver disease that makes me too sick to work or do much of anything really. So I'm always talking to him or playing with him. I do know that we get my boyfriend's son every other weekend and Bayne remembers him. When Jer walks in the bedroom when he gets here, Bayne gets excited and starts glass surfing. I'm pretty sure yours will remember you. It took Bayne a few times before he got use to Jer coming and going though, so don't be disappointed if s/he doesn't react the way you're expecting the first few times.
You can always leave a shirt you've worn with him for the time your away. He will remember you, like stated above it just may take some time for him to get used to you coming and going in the meantime.
