I know I have posted on here before about my 4 cats and how my upstairs is totally off limits to them as my "cat free zone" I keep my 3 beardie boys and my 2 gecko girls up there as a safe a haven for them. I also need it hair free so I can craft and sew. For some reason the ironing board is the place to be when it is set up and all 4 covet the spot but there is nothing worse then try to iron on a cat hair covered board.( Believe me, I know) The door to this area are actually 2 doors on hinges that I secure in the middle with a hook and eye on both sides of the door to keep them out. 2 days ago I came up for lights on and found the door slightly open. My linen closet door was open and the stuff I stored on the top shelf was on the floor. The small doors that lead to my cubby holes in both rooms were wide open and one of the box hides Mike made in my gecko cage was up and on it's side but the top of the enclosure was in place. I am a little freaked out when I see this but think Mike must have left the door unlocked and one of the cats opened the doors and MAYBE I left the hide up like that in one of my absent minded moments!

Yesterday I came up to find the door slightly a jar again. But the this time I find my poor gecko in her moist hide. Both of her hides are askew and she is in the middle of her enclosure in her moist hide. Fully intact and unharmed. It seems that my Maincoon, Oliver has learned how to open the door by slipping his paws underneath and shaking the door back and forth until the lock pops open.(he learned how to do this before but only if it was locked from the inside) He must jump up on the screened top where there are 2 ventilation holes on either side. He must stick his paws in and flip those hides over but his weight keeps him from actually being able to get the screen off(for the time being. I am sure he would eventually figured this out too) But she, being female outfoxed him by going to the only place he could not reach, which was her moist hide!! Mike said she was probably sitting there laughing at him!!! She certainly did not look distressed at all!! Now I have a hairtie keeping both knobs together so he can't do it again. Though I have seen him try. ;)

I call it a "love tap" haha. Thats what I like about the ole rolled up newspaper trick. All it does is scare them and associates said behavior unenjoyable experience. No risk of injury or pain.

My father often did this with new pets, to help teach them ...
Take a tin with a removable lid, place several pennies inside, and cap off..
When new pet does something undesirable, shake the tin, and say NO. Pet will associate this sound with undesirable actions, and not do them...
Verbal and tactile praise after wards is an excellent way to reward the pet for good behaviors.
Hope this helps.

Justus...I was just kidding. But my cats are so spoiled it really does hurt their feelings if I swat them. This particular boy is a real sweetheart but if he were an outside cat he'd be a favored mouser. He gets VERY interested when I walk by with my beardies and I can not turn my back for an instant during bath time!!

Janie it is a great idea and one I'll be putting together later this afternoon. I am not sure if he's doing it late at night or early in the morning.
