Lifetime of mercury vapor bulbs

I was at the vet the other day, and my vet said that UVB bulbs need to be changed every six months, but mercury vapor could go longer, but she was not aware of exactly how long. Does anyone know about this? I just need to know how often to replace. Thanks!

MVB's should be replaced every 6 months if your using it only as the UVB source- we dont recommend certain types of MVB's they are not all the same - good ones are Mega Ray and Power Sun -- the UVB does not last as long as the heat and should have a back up long tube fixture - Screens will block the UVB rays as well -- I am not a fan of MVB's they are good for taking on trips and short use - the heat is great on them but UVB not so much - to me they are a over priced heat lamp - if you need help w/ getting a good long tube fixture I can post links for you -- you can still use the MVB for heat but I do recommend a back up for the UVB
