I am getting a new bearded dragon and I am trying to make my final decision. I absolutely love the bigger dragons. Is there a significant difference in adult size of a leatherback versus that of a standard?
They are the same size in general. Size, even among the same morph can vary greatly, just as you get big and small people and the way they are raised can also be an influence. As far as I know the only naturally larger ones are a type called a German Giant, which is a rare and expensive morph.
Depends on the genetics, how they are raised from the start. Buy a healthy beardie of appropriate size and weight for its age. More than a few breeders are churning out runts from inbreeding and housing to many in a small enclosures. Make sure you know length, weight and DOH before buying, and compare to healthy dragons of the same age. Dont buy a dragon less than 6 or 7 weeks old, better to buy one that is around 4 months, 14-15" and 130 to 150 grams. If they are 4 months or older they should be this size, not 9 to 11" and under 60 grams as some are selling.
If they are way under sized there is a good chance they are or have been sick, parasites or ADV or both. Pass......
