Hi, I'm Thyde and my new one yr old male started yesterday acting lethargic and today refusing to chase his food. He did take one cricket from my hand but has ignored the rest. He acted fine yesterday in fact he ate 8 crickets and 2 super worms. I thought maybe he was just full but no change in lathargie today.
I got him Saturday today is Thursday. He has not pooped yet- I'm wondering if that's what is going on. Previous owner said he poops every 4 day or so and he went the day I picked him up. I have given him a warm bath this morning and let him bask in direct sunlight for about 30. He perked up but then reverted to the same behavior. This afternoon he is even closing his eyes when I'm holding him. He is getting calcium and multi's every day, misting and greens. He has not drank from his water bowl that I can tell.previous owner said he went through his brumated stage a month ago.
Need a little advise to know what's going on.
Thanks

Thyde - beardies can sometimes take several days to adjust to a new environment. and they all act differently. when I got my first beardie - it was 3 weeks (!!!) before he pooped. that was not good for either of us.

can you provide us some more information about his viv? what are basking temps? what are cool temps? how large is the viv? does he have a hide?

beardies generally DO NOT drink from a water bowl - they don't recognize standing water as something to drink. both of mine will drink their bath water, but not always. get a medicine dropper from the drugstore (ask at the counter for a dosing syringe and you may get one for free) and use it to drop water on his snout. he may lick it off. it may take some time to train him to do this - both of mine actually look forward to this. they will NOT absorb water through their vent - that's a myth. it's gotta be orally - via dropper or veggies. Brumation is tricky. don't try to pin it down. My first beardie would go into brumation for MONTHS !!! I wouldn't see him at all. My current girl has not yet bromated. My current boy sleeps a lot, is eating less and is less active, but he is up and about a bit during the day. Some will go completely asleep for a couple of weeks, then be awake, then be asleep etc.

if you can - get us a pic of the viv ?? Keep askin those questions - a great way to learn !! Also - check the links below my signature for some super info put together by a couple of the folks on here.

His basking temp stays around 98.3 when not in the morning sun. When the sun is on it it's around 102.. His cool side stays around 85. He has a basking log and a to small hide that I'm working on remedying. I have not done much as far as changing his environment until he get through this adjustment stage. 0 change in his diet from his previous owners. I just replaced his uvb light yesterday and he seem perkier today. Still no pooping. Sending pics your way. Please let me know if you have suggestions to change anything to help him be healthier and happier!
Thanks for the info. It backs up what my cousin said who raises or has raised them in the past.

Sounds like he's going through a bit of an adjustment to his new home. Be very careful feeding him with the sand in the tank. Sand can cause impaction, and bacterial infections.

Should I take the sand out, and replace it with what? Previous owners had a courser sand and ceramic tiles
He did not eat well yesterday- what are the signs of imp action and what do I do about it?

Actually the pics posted are of his set up with his previous owners. I change only the sand and removed the tiles. I used a sand they gave me that is vet recommended reptile substrate. Orange in color. That's what the pet stores have available also. I will be cleaning his tank today or tomorrow and I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks for the help

Take the sand out and put the tiles back in. Sand can cause impaction. If it's sand with calcium added it's really bad, they lick everything. The calcium used in calci sand is the same stuff that Tums is made of. If they eat too much it will neutralize their stomach acid and cause issues for them. Even if you sift the poop out of the sand, a little gets left behind. It can cause bacterial infections on the skin. It can get in their eyes and scratch their corneas, they can breath it in. Not to mention the sand that is going to be all around your house from taking your dragon in and out of the tank.

Repticarpet is popular, tile is really good, non adhesive shelf liner is real easy to clean.
