IDK what other people use, but I have this little plastic pad that is adhesive and sticks to the bottom of the tank. Since George likes 2 sleep under his log in the sand, I put it under there. I've never had a problem with him as far as that goes, and he actually seems 2 like it. Once I turn off the lights int he cage, he automatically goes under the log and puts his belly right on top of the little pad. IDK what it's called, but it was given 2 me by my husband's uncle who used to have snakes...

A ceramic heat emitter (CHE) is great for winter nights.
It screws into a normal light fixture and gives off heat from above with no light, so your beardie can sleep and be warm.

Heat pads arent so great as beardies do not feel heat on their bellies and can get burned real easilly. If you decide to go that way first test the temps ON the pad or better yet, attach it to the side of the enclosure so your beardie can get next to it and NOT on top of it.

I used to have a heat pad before I knew about the burn risk but found the heat emitted in winter wasnt suffucient anyway. The CHE was and you get them in 2 wattages 60 and 100 depending on your enclosure size and house temps.

Sorry this might sound stupid but do you leave the CHE on all night? I've heard and read a lot about the heat mats not being ideal and just want to do best by amber.

Like Renee said it depends on the house temps. Here is what I did.

1st get a timer for the CHE

Monitor your house temps to see when the temps start dropping really low

In autumn when it wasnt that cold I put it on for a few hours (during the parts of the night that was the coldest)
In full winter I had it running the full 10 hours from when her lights went off till they came back on. (8PM - 6AM)

When spring started I gradually reduced the timer as follows
1st, On @ 10PM off @6AM
then, on @ midnight off @ 6AM
then, on @ 2AM off @6AM
Now we are on @ 2AM and off @ 4AM

No need for heat at night as long as temps stay above 60~65*. It is good for them to cool off like they would naturally.

I used to use the heat light at night, once I stopped using it they where actually better eaters and more active...

My house is about 62 overnight and I have never had an issue.

Hope this helps !
