Hello everyone!! This is my girl Snow. We got her in February from our vet tech who needed to revoke her since she wasno longer able to spend time with her like she wanted to. Well said she was in good health and seemed to be doing great until the last month or so. She hasn’t really been wanting to eat much at all and she is really lazy. So naturally we scheduled her an appointment for her first vet visit, my first as well with an exotic. The vet had awesome reviews and many recommendations. However the results of the visit we very saddening. Apparently my girl has what doc believes to be either calcified eggs or calcification of her ovaries. It may possibly even be both. So after spending a ton, close to $1000 on her set up and over $200 on the first visit they’re quoting about $800 for the surgery. Let me first state that price isn’t my concern here. I’m just looking to do what is best for my girl and want to be sure this is it. Has anyone else here gone through this? I’ve attached her pic as well as her X-ray pic so you have more information.
Any help, experiences, or opinions would be greatly appreciated!!! TIA

I am a first time beardie owner, so i cant say for certain what im looking at in the xray, but i do have experience with lizards getting surgery, im pointing out the obvious here but i think It should be stated, reptiles are very hard to operate on from their small frames to organ placement (its been said it’s easier to operate on a bird than a reptile) id ask the doctor what are her chances during surgery , what will be the quality of life after , in my experience (i live on a farm, you may not like my response but i still think it should be viewed upon) we had a lepord gecko that got egg bound and surgery was not the answer and we lost her regardless, it was a learning experience but a sad one at that , you have to think about the longrun, lets say surgery goes okay, now she has to recover and that will be very difficult, heres some links so you can do your own reading, Eggbound Calcified eggs, if you have confidence in the doctor and the beardies fighting spirit surgery is an option, my concern is the quality of life and if she’ll be in pain the rest of her life, we love our pets so much sometimes we hurt them by still wanting them around. Hope I didn’t offend you or anyone, that wasn’t my intention.. I apologize if i was blunt. I hope something for your girl can be done.

No offense taken at all. I’m just trying to get people opinions, guidance, and their experience so I can do what’s best for her. He didn’t use the word egg bound but only said he felt hard spots then you can see 2 round areas in the abdomen on the X-ray. As of the last month or so she just doesn’t seem to want to eat much greens. She will eat a bug here or there but not near what they seem to recommend.
I did ask how often the doctors has had to do these and they said they have done about 10 in the last few months. Some on beardie’s, but it happens a lot with chameleons. I have had a ton of people recommended him as a great vet and I really did like him. I’m just trying to make sure it is what’s best for her as she’s only 4. I appreciate your reply and your honesty. I’ll definitely take a look at the provided link.

I did notice the masses placement, I thought it was odd the one was further down, thats really good the doctor has had some experience in this kind of surgery, and with different lizards! , she can still live a long and happy life, if and when you decide to make a decision keep us updated on her if you can.

I Most definitely will. I have it scheduled for may 7th as of right now. We just took in a stool sample yesterday and when she went she seemed to be straining a bit and it looked like there could be blood so that date may change depending on the results.
I appreciate your concern!
