Hi, new here and still learning so much about bearded dragons. We got out son a bearded dragon May 30th, they estimated 4-5 months old. We have a 40 gal tank, paper towel at the bottom, a basking area and a cool area, with uvb lighting. He eats 3-6 crickets with calcium a day, sometimes eats mealworms. Salad of collard greens or kale is always provided with clean water that has been conditioned. He has been shedding for about 2 weeks, the bottom jaw area had a dark color we thought was shed. On Saturday it started looking bad and the jaw looks maybe infected. We think maybe mouth rot or stuck shed that led to infection.
I have called 3 vets, only one sees reptiles and its 2 hours away, they wont see us until August. Otherwise we would have to travel out of state to find a reptile vet. Anyone have an idea what this is and what we might be able to do to help?
He is still eating well and darting around his cage, so overall seems healthy except for his mouth.

Please get some raw unpasteurized honey on it NO crickets in the tank please -- they will go straight to the mouth / jaw -- manuka is a good example -- please go over your surface basking temps and UVB - your little dragon looks miserable - mom and dad your gonna haft to step in here and take care of the dragon - dragons really arent kids pets they are too complex - he should be eating 20-25 crickets per feeding at least 2 times per day w/ a ONCE a day dusting of calcium D3 on the insects I would switch him to dubia roaches and some BSFL they are a great staple for babies - less headache than crickets - is he eating his salads? I can post websites for the insects / worms - please NO more meal worms they are too harsh on babies stomachs - better treats worms are super - horn worms - the dragon looks more like 3 months old - how is he getting water? Once we get the tank on par w/ correct surface basking temps 105-110 taken w/ a digital probe thermometer and a good UVB NO coils please he will bounce back but the honey is going to clear up the stuff around the mouth

Oh wow okay. We got this guy at a independent reptile store after doing some research. I've find a lot of different information on what to do with them online and find it difficult to know best practices. The reptile store told us 2 crickets or 1 mealworm every other day; since most research we found said daily feeding and more then what the store told us we've been following more of what we researched. I will order Dubai roaches today, we went straight to the store and got the manuka honey and put some on his lip and mouth area. He has a lot more shed today around his eyes today. Humidity is running high lately, the humidity in our area (not tank, just where we live) has been 80% or higher for about 2 weeks. We put a fan on top of the tank which seems to help and have a window air conditioner going in another room to help dry the air as well. He has a water dish in his tank. We have already ordered more decor for better enrichment and tube uvb. None has come in yet and probably will be a week or so because getting any orders takes forever. He doesn't seem to eat the salad unless my son hand feeds it, and then its onky a few small pieces. We truly want to help make him healthy, so thank you for the help. Also his name is Trogdor. We dont actually know if hes a biy or girl, we jsut tend ot go with he.

ok nice name our first dragon was Trogdor- he was a high school dragon pet and we brought him home as a summer care project for my daughter and ended up w/ him - ok so first we need to get two digital probe thermometers Zoo Med makes them - next you want a digital probe hygrometer for the humidity - stick ons are inaccurate - 40-50 % is optimal 80 is pretty high so please get the hygrometer as soon as you can - what brand and bulb did you get for the UVB not all UVB's are of good quality - please do not listen to the person who told you 2 crickets / 1 meal worm every other day - your going to end up w/ a dead dragon from starvation - dragons did not drink from water dishes usually -- he needs his salads rinsed before serving and I would offer him water on his nose once a week - you can drop it to see if he will lick it off - the greens will give him hydration - watch his poops you want them to be dark formed and moist for poop and white solid formed urate no crusty dried out looking then he would be dehydrated - make sure your feeding insects no bigger than the space between his eyes and feed as many as he will eat in a 10 minute time span - dubias he should be eating around 10-15 per feeding appropriately sized - get him some BSFL www.symtonbsf.com order medium those are great for babies and to use as salad lures they are a larvae - do not dust them - you want a bowl like this to keep them in https://www.amazon.com/Reptile-Food-Bowl-Dish-Anti-Escape/dp/B07VRQ369N?tag=exoticpetnetw-20
We can sex him / her when hes / shes about 5 months old - please get the dragon into a plastic tote NO LID once a a day and take him outside for good UVB ---- place him in some sun for about 10-15 minutes depending on how hot it is you dont want to burn him up ---- DO NOT LEAVE HIM ALONE-- you dont want a bird to get him -- this will help his lip and his over all health -- UVB is extremely important --- that is why I asked about the UVB your getting not all are of good quality --
