What does the normal green rug look like? Personally think the set up in the picture is fine. I have sand in three of my five dragon enclosures without problems and used it 20 years ago with my first dragons without any issues.Only feed one in the sand enclosure because he won't eat outside it. They could get their claws caught in some rug materials so keep an eye on him.

I have children's play sand in mine. They get their calcium from their daily dustings of Rep-Cal.I wouldn't use the vita sand because of compaction risks. If they are getting enough calcium with regular feedings then they won't need to look somewhere else.

Be careful with the water dish in the tank, if he doesn't drink out of it then remove it. Most bearded dragons don't drink standing water and having the dish in the tank just raises the humidity. Also, invest in a temp gun, they only cost about $13. The temp gauges on the wall of the tank only measures the temp on the wall of the tank and not the basking area where you bearded dragon is going to actually be sitting.
