I live in the uk in a small town called dalbeattie in south west Scotland. I got my first dragon just before Christmas. When I got him I was told he was a leatherback. His name is Rheagal. I had wanted a beardie for a few years but I had to convince my wife but now we have him she loves him. He is great and has loads of character will put some photos on of him and my set up.

Thanks.

Rheagal is not a morning lizard. When he reluctantly gets up after the lights go on he moves v slowly to his favourite basking spot to warm up. Once he is warm he beard goes black and he starts flexing it back and forth then we get a display of slow head bobs and fast head bobs with fast arm waves mixed in. He charges about banging into the glass while head bobbing. After doing this for a while he settles down and we are able to touch him.

We find that he is a nosy lizard and always wants to know what is going on. When we are in the room he watches us continually. We get him out everyday which he loves and sometimes we put him on the windowsill so he can watch the world go by. He would lie there all day and puts a fight when he is moved and getting cool as he loves it so much.

He doesn't really like bathes and he puffs himself out to make himself float and sometimes he will swim but just to the nearest side. He doesn't like change and goes mad if you change anything in his Viv. His favourite colour is orange. Any orange veg you put in the Viv for him gets eaten first. He is also drawn to orange light.

At night he like being out and sleeping on his heated bed with a cover on him so the light doesn't disturb him. When it comes to the time when he goes back into his Viv his bed goes with him till morning when it is lifted out when he gets up.

I always find it cool to hear about the individual personalities... they're all so unique and different! My boy would poof out his beard while he was warming in the morning too, suck it back in then poof it out again, in and out it was so funny to watch! Your tank is beautiful! One suggestion I would offer is to replace the thermometers hanging out on the walls with digital ones with probes you can place in the exact spot he sits. It would give much more accurate readings :) It's nice to meet you and your handsome boy!

Ok got a digital temp gauge now and the temps were off a bit what temp should it be under spot and surrounding area at the hot end? I have it 41 under the spot light and 33 surrounding area, does this sound ok?

He's a cute one! I love hearing about the personalities. My older dragon Dexter is not a morning lizard and she will sit on her hammock for hours before she wanders around. My little guy Luci is a morning lizard. He is waiting for me at the doors of his tank every morning waiting for breakfast! Luci also watches everything we do and turns his head to our voice but when we try to pick him up he runs!

For a juvenile the temp in the basking spot itself should be around 46 celsius. The cool side should be anywhere from 24-29 celsius.

I was thinking the same thing!! And the one where he's sleeping with his mouth open a bit looks like he's right in the middle of a snore...like, oh God it's so loud you're gonna wake the neighbors kind of snore!

Nice looking dragon and setup! Good call on replacing the temperature measurers, my only other piece of advice is to remove the wood chips. He could accidentally eat one while hunting or tasting things with his tongue (which dragons do often).

Thanks for your advice. I have added more sandstone to his Viv and have separate areas some with wood chips and some without. When we feed him it is never on the wood chip area and we watch him to make sure he doesn't eat any. He really likes the wood chips as he burrows and sleeps on them. It is very hard to find non conflicting advice and information as when I got him I was told never put him on sand as it causes impaction and to put him on wood chip. When I got him home I quickly found that he was indeed eating some wood chips while hunting. I thought the best option was to put him on reptile carpet. I have left the wood chips in as he has always been on wood chips and to give him different terrain and interest.
