My name is Melody. I am from Fayetteville NC. I am a stay at home mom. Last night my husband gave me my Christmas present. It was a beardie. He is pretty but I belive he has been neglected quite a bit, he is missing a couple of toes and a piece of his tail. I am sort of new to them. I had one about 8 years ago for about a year before I had to give her up. Here is the setup he got with it last night. I know I have to get some more lighting for him and make a top for it. Any other suggestions would help. Oh a deep cleaning is needed. I dont think they cleaned it out ever

Welcome! Getting rid of the sand was the first thing I was going to mention, who knows when it was cleaned last  We just rescued one last weekend and we ended up throwing away everything, including the tank she came in because it smelled so bad because it was so dirty. He looks pretty good, he's got a nice big fat head. He does look like he could use some food and I would probably give him a bath. You are also going to need to get a UVB light for his tank. Repti Sun 10.0 HO tubes are the best. Get some digital temp gauges or a temperature gun to check temps.

Welcome to the forum!! and welcome back into the Beardie world :) He looks pretty good considering.. Yep sounds like a Beardie makeover is in order lol A good enclosure clean out, lighting and heating, a good nice warm soak you can even use a soft tooth brush to help just go in the direction of his scales.. I wouldn't be surprised if after a bit he sheds with some good groceries in him.. Maybe his missing toes and tail got nipped off in some over crowding dominance situation.. :(
Keep the pictures coming and what a great Christmas present for you both!

Does anyone have a good idea for a top besides screen? Has anyone ever made on out of ply wood and turned out ok? Pictures would help a lot. I have a dog who is very smart and determined to get to know my new friend.

I don't know of any suggestions on this one sorry :( I have 3 cats that love to sit ontop of things but knock on wood they have not tried to get into Izzy's enclosure. Have you tried the metal clips to hold the screen top on?

I don't know how good plywood would be with a glass case unless you make some pretty big holes so he can get plenty of air, plus you'd have to have holes for the lights, that's not leaving much wood left for the cover. I saw some screen clips at pet smart, that might be your best option, just use a bunch of them in case your dog would knock it over. I'm pretty new to this so I don't know a whole lot but I hope I helped a little bit
