Hi! I am planning on acquiring a Dragon within the next few weeks and wish to have his/her habitat ready prior to arrival. So many opinions on what is best!!! Very confusing! I want everything to be just right... :)

So.... I am having trouble finding a tank of the right size... if I understand 55 gallons is correct. Some sites say 40 gals. is enough... What do you all think? Also, is a standard glass aquarium tank a good choice, or should I try to make sure it is a reptile terrarium?

Decor/Furniture: What do you all use for climbing and basking? I'd like something that looks more natural (rather than a carpet covered board or something) - what do you all use? Do your Beardies climb a lot? I do plan on avoiding a heat rock and or under tank heating pad... but what do you all recommend for night use (other than the "night" lights that have visible light)?

Did you start with babies or older dragons? How about colors? I'd love one of those really brightly colored dragons I've seen online, but I don't think I want to "mail order" a live animal!!!! What did you all do?

Do you purchase live prey or raise it? Is mail order a good idea for prey insects such as roaches and crickets? I don't know if I want to deal with eggs, but I do think that ordering them is a better deal than running to the pet store all the time...

Obviously, I am very excited about my impending acquisition of a Bearded Dragon! Nice to meet you.

Thank you all!!

First off...welcome to the forum! So many questions I can tell you're excited :) I can only give my own opinion so here goes.. I have a 40 gallon breeder "critter cage" tank with reptile carpet as substrate. I use three small paving stones stacked, with a branch leaning on them, as a basking area. I have two heating lights (I can't seem to keep my temps where they need to be with only one) and a Reptisun 10.0 mounted inside the tank for UV exposure. Do NOT use any lights at nighttime! Nothing is needed for heat at nighttime unless the temps are dropping below 65F. I've started with babies, in fact my last one was mail order lol. Beardies will climb closer to the heat/light source...getting back DOWN though is sometimes a problem for adults, watch they don't fall. I used to buy crickets at the store when needed but now I buy dubia roaches and am contemplating starting a colony. Something worth researching :) I'm sure ppl who know a lot more than me will have lots more info ;) Here's a pic of my setup..
