Hiya,

I’ve been reading a lot on here looking for similar situations to what my rankins dragom Loki seems to be going through and I’ve come across some fairly similar ones but just wanted people’s thoughts.

So my little guy Loki (born April 2020) seems in absolutely perfect health. He is sociable, energetic, basking normally, etc. However, I’ve come to notice that when he poops some of his insides will come out a bit while he poops, but then they go straight back in afterwards. it appears as a pink/reddish moist blob and comes out to about 1cm out.

Obviously when I noticed this I was alarmed and googled and became more alarmed when words like prolapse started coming up. But everything about prolapse indicated this is when the insides do not go back in. I asked on a facebook group and had varying opinions from omg get him to a vet asap to people telling me that it is normal in some reptiles and not to be concerned unless it stops going back in.
To be on the safe side I took him to my local exotic specialist vet (apparently they have a keen interest in exotic vetinary...its the best I could get in my area & the one that my local reptile stores use). The vet was happy with his health and personality and drew me a little diagram to explain his anatomy. The advice was basically keep an eye on it but don’t be too alarmed unless it stops going back in.

I haven‘t managed to get any photos of it happening, as soon as I try or attempt to adjust him it goes straight back in before I get a chance haha. He’s never shown any discomfort and he hasn’t reacted when I’ve poked and prodded him to examine him.

So I’m not too concerned as all in all he seems very happy and healthy. I track his weight which has stayed pretty consistent, and I log his poop schedule & the amount he eats too. This has dropped slightly since he brumated around Christmas but I think that’s also to do with his less rapid growth now. He has salad daily which he mostly ignores but I do make him slurries occasionally if he hasn’t eaten any himself for a while.

Temps in the viv are all normal - monitored continually by Microclimate Evo Lite Thermostat. Also have a hydrometer to monitor those and has the usual T5 UVB so all fine in that area.

So I guess my question after that long winded explanation is it just his hemipenal that comes out when he poops? I have read some things to suggest this may be what is happening? Or just generally has anyone else experienced this?

If you can take him to a vet. Wait for more people to respond. But please he could have parasites. Have you gotten him checked up lately

Can you go over his diet for us please so we can rule out the colon, unfortunately its a waiting game, I really cant say whats what till we have a picture, but it is odd that it happens when he poos, how is his stool? Runny and hard stools can both cause prolapses, was what you saw did it appear more white and fleshy or red, if red then it could of been his colon if white/pinkish it could of been himself, like i said we really need a picture, it literally could be both at the same time and we wouldn’t know, either way!! If it is his boy bits he could be trying to pass a sperm plug aswell,..

Look up a utuber called animal1guy, he specializes in neglected lizards , he has a boy beardie that he removed the sperm plug from, it might give you some insight. I hope its not a prolapse, please don’t worry yourself till you need to worry, he’s probably fine and is just looking for a wife :)

Of course - so he predominantly eats locusts at the moment. He did sometimes have mealworms but I think he was having more trouble digesting these, along with dubia roaches which we tried a while ago as well. So at the moment just sticking to the locusts. I'll offer them every day at the momemt and he is eating about 4 roughly a day I'd say on average but can differ - he only wanted two today!

Then salad daily - mainly spinach and rocket goes in the tank but sometimes will add other bits like butternut squash but I don't think he's actually eating any of the variety bits...he loves his rocket the most.

His poo looks healthy as far as I'm aware - it was very hard when he immediately woke from brumation just after christmas but he's fine now, shows signs of being well hydrated. The urate is clear white & the more other part is solid but also comes out with the normal puddle I guess!

I would say definitely on the darker/red side of things. I tried to grab a picture today but it goes back so quick afterwards I'll keep trying though!

Thank you I will have a look!
I did wonder about sperm plugs - having a female beardie in the past this is a whole new world I never knew about
I don't think it is a prolapse as its been going on the last few months at least and potentially longer and he's still his normally cheeky happy self! Haha yes maybe he's just a bit randy after his brumation nap

I dont wanna rule out prolapse cause i dont wanna look stupid if it ends up being that, but if it truly goes back in that quick im almost certain its his boy bits, everything ur telling me is pointing to it just being his parts, where are you getting ur hoppers from? A local shop?(ive tried getting some (my girl loves em) And do you cut the thorny back legs off?

Yeah that's what made me go to the vet in the first place! I'll keep monitoring it to make sure it keeps going back.
I get my hoppers from the local reptile shop normally - luckily we have a really good one close by! I haven't tried that but maybe I should? Their legs do look dauntingly long sometimes!

I have a male tokay so i know a little about boy bits popping (geckos will pop it when a female is around) not the haunch part of the leg with the meat , idk if u have the same hoppers as i do here in Florida but ours have wicked spikes on the back segment , and i just trim them my girl completely upchucked one a long time ago , cause I guess it was still kicking, from then on i cut the leg which i do kinda feel bad about cause i love all bugs and I respect my feeders. But beardie’s health is important.

I managed to capture a video of it this time! Way better than me describing it!
