Hello Folks! I am a middle age woman who fell in love with beardies after dragon sittiing for 4 months:) I have all of my supplies now to find a dragon of my very own.I have read up and studied about the little guys(actually while I was dragon sitting) Of course I decided to get a beardie from a reputable breeder or maybe even rescue one from craigslist(kind of scared about cl as I have no prior experience and if one was not well cared for could I rehab it?) Well then it happened and I need a honest answer from beardie experts. Is in Petsmart buying parrot food and I walked by the enclosure of beardies and a little guy/gal was staring up at me.I have driven 57 mile round trip to see this dragon 4 times.(I live in a rural area and I do not believe reptile sales or pet sales are high at this location) So here I am,at my age talking to the little guy through the enclosure.Everytime a person walks by he runs to the front of enclosure!! Now I know Petsmart probably is a lousy place to even buy crickets but I feel so bad for little guy.He seems so happy to see people. So all experts, should I get him(I probably risk a lot as I don't know his care or anything else for that matter. No he isn't even a special morph, just a plain john or jane so to speak. What shout I do? Thank you all! And happy tp be hear!

Welcome to the world of Bearded Dragons! I am in a similar situation, last year at the age of 38 I decided that I wanted to get frogs and then I got my bearded dragon Dexter. When people hear I have these guys they automatically assume they belong to my children, but I don't have any! Everyone thinks I'm crazy!

To answer your question, buying at Petsmart isn't always a bad thing. I bought Dexter at Petsmart and she has been perfectly healthy and she probably about 11 months old. You just want to make sure that the dragon looks healthy. Is the enclosure the proper temperature? Is it clean? Is there poop in there and if so does it look runny? How does the dragon look? Does it have all it's toes and do they look healthy? Is the tail straight or does it look like there was some trauma? Is the BD alert with bright eyes? Is it too thin? Does it have any visible sores or anything that would be concerning?

When I bought Dexter the lady that was working the reptile area owned a bearded dragon herself and she seemed to care about the ones in her store so I felt confident that it was going to be okay.

Also, I buy some of my crickets at Petco and have had no problems with them. Dexter's appetite has slowed and I can buy 50 large crickets and have them last weeks. Just make sure you gut load them and have some type of water source. I use Flukers Cricket Quencher and a dry cricket meal plus any leftover veggies from what I give Dexter.

I would say this TeeTee"

Save the little one and buy it. You have Dragon Fever, Yeah! What I mean by saving it is most chain-pet stores do not keep adequate heat on their reptiles. Like my local Petco, they are only at 85-90 degrees in their enclosures and BD's need 100-110 degrees to digest their food. Taking one from a pet store would be like rescuing one in my opinion. I however, never did get the chance to because I spent a LOT of money on mine from a reputable breeder only because I wanted something unique. If this isn't you, buy the BD at PetSmart.
