I found this page because I was searching for bioactive substrate and decided to sign up. I currently have two beardies. York, I inherited from my daughter a couple years ago when she had to move out of state and couldn't take him, and Stimpy, who I rescued from a terrible owner.

York is a great boy that loves to be held. He's healthy and happy, especially when I let him hang out outside in his custom made enclosure. Stimpy has a very bad case of MBD, but he's well loved and care for now, and while I probably won't be able to reverse the MBD, at least I know that he's not going to get worse.

I'm looking to upgrade York's tank from a 55 gallon to a 75 gallon and I want to get a bioactive substrate going in there for him. I read the big, long post by jarich and think I have it down but if anyone has any pointers I'm all ears (eyes).

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully @jarich will come around and give you some pointers. As far as I know, he's the only one doing bioactive around here.

Hey, jarich.

I don't think I have any right now. I'd planned on starting to put it together tomorrow because I have some free time and I now have everything except the African nightcrawlers. Those will be here soon.

Nice! Ya, those species of nightcrawler really do well inside enclosures. Would love to see any pictures you want to share too. Good luck!

Dena, here's the post. There are also some good FB groups that help support people wanting to go bioactive. I'm not sure if they're allowed to be posted here so if you'd like more information you can PM me and I'll link them for you.

I never did post pictures, so I'll remedy that now. I do have to say that York is so much happier in his new home. Everything is established so the only thing I do is water his tank once in a while. There are roaches, supers, and crickets living in there that escaped during mealtime, in addition to the cleaning crew which is made up of isopods, springtails, and African nightcrawlers.

Welcome and I am looking forward to seeing how things go for you on the bioactive set up. I don't have any experience in this area but I'm glad that jarich chimed in.
