Hi everybody my name is Dave and I've just got my first Beardie. A little guy/girl named Reptar.

Reptar seems really healthy but I'm a little concerned about his feeding. When I first put him in his Viv he stayed still for about 15 minutes then went straight to a dish full of mealworms and had a few, after that I offered him a few crickets and he ate them too.

The problem now is that he isn't eating his crickets. He'll just watch them pass and not bother. I decided I'd offer him some mealworms from tongs this morning to see if he'd take them and he did (I don't plan on making a habit of hand feeding him I just wanted to see if he'd eat) but when I offered a cricket in the same manner he turned his head but ate the next few mealworms he was offered.

Could it be that he doesn't like crickets or is it just because he is still settling in?

Also he is starting to shed on his back could thus also be why he can't be bothered to hunt?

My temps are 35C on his basking spot and 25C on his cool end. He has pooped twice since I got him on the 24th with 2 days in between.

Welcome to your next addiction. Mealworms aren't the way to go, try superworms. as far as not eating crickets you are giving bacon (worms are high in fat and very tasty) then offer some dried out burgers(crickets), they will eat the burgers when hungry but will try and hold out for bacon.

Ahh right I didn't realise mealworms were so high in fat. He's a little bit small for superworms for now so I'll stick to crickets and maybe small locusts for now. Although I have some phoenix worms and silk worms on the way so if he's into worms they'll be more nutritious for him.

Thanks for the reply :)

Since this I've tried him with locusts, Dubia roaches, phoenix worms and silk worms and he eats them all without hesitation.

He must just hate crickets haha
