Heating question

Hello,

Similar question to one I asked a couple weeks ago. Should my basking lamp provide enough heat on its own? With only the lamp on I am only getting basking surface temps of 95. I have to use a ceramic heater to reach over 105 for basking. My ambient temps are almost 110 degrees because of this though. I’m using a 100 watt basking bulb. Using a digital probe to obtain the temps.

You dont want over a 105 for a adult dragon - as long as your getting the surface temp of 95 that is good for a adult basking- the ambient temp is around the hot side correct? Is he staying in that area to bask - what is the temp of the middle of the tank ? I am assuming in the 90's air temp

The ambient temp on the hot side is 111 with the ceramic heater on. Temp on cold side is around 80 but he never goes to that side. He stays on the basking area pretty much all day

If he's on that side most of the time he's fine-- he has the option of moving to a cooler side if he wants let him choose

A probe is not really a good way to measure your surface temperatures. You really need a point and shoot IR thermometer. I got mine from Lowe’s back in my days of growing… ummm…. Plants… in my back room. A temporal thermometer like you can get in the pharmacy section at Walmart should work too.

The temporal thermometers from the pharmacy section do NOT work, sorry! They will accurately measure people but not surfaces like stone or logs or slate or resin (I know, I tried while waiting for my IR thermometer and digital probe to be delivered back ìn the day). IR guns are pretty accurate but so are digital probes if used correctly...they have to be mounted on the back wall of the tank with the probe in contact with the basking surface for at least 30 to 45 minutes to get an accurate temp. The probe itself can be affixed to the basking surface to hold it in place. My IR themometer and digital probe are normally within one degree of each other...I used both to check them.

IR guns are good but not accurate on certain basking materials- example hammocks-- please use a digital probe for the most accurate
