As I'm learning about BD's, I've noticed that there is a type that seems to have a continuous grin. Do you know which one this is?

Not sure if there is a particular type that does it. I think it is just luck. Mine seems to take a lot of pictures with a grin on his face. Here is one for example.

Oh my goodness, Ron! This is EXACTLY the one I'm referring to! (I actually have one of the other grinning pictures with his "hands" crossed as wallpaper on my phone because it makes me grin every time I look at it. Hope you don't mind.)

I use this one for my wallpaper. He isn't grinning as much but I like how the picture came out.

How can I forget. I still can't believe how much they look alike.

I know right?! The difference between them is that Dexter is hypo, all of her nails are clear.

Troy is usually an orange color but always seems to have a different color depending on the picture. He was more brown as a baby but started turning more orange after every shed. He is approaching one year and has been acting really weird lately. He is not eating nearly as much as he used to and not pooping during his morning bath like he normally would do. Hopefully it is just a phase but it is driving me nuts.

I don't know. I don't even know his actual birthdate. We bought him from a pet store who had no information about him. They did take very good care of him however and handled him every day. He has had a great disposition since the day we brought him home. Here is a picture I just took tonight.

That's a great picture he's very photogenic! Dexter was darker too when she was younger but the orange comes out when she sheds or has a bath. Sometimes she has like a pink/salmon color to her, especially if you look at her tail close. We got her at a pet store too and estimate her to be about 10 months now. Maybe it's an age thing because Dexter stopped eating as much food too and with veggies I might as well be feeding a child broccoli! I leave her a salad every morning though in hopes she eats a little of it. She usually just sits on her hammock all day but this week I made her a sand box and I actually caught her checking it out a few times on her own. She doesn't dig in it, just sits for now.

I think mine is somewhere between 10 and 12 months. Troy is the same way with his salad. Every morning I make him a salad of collard greens, summer squash, carrots and blueberries. Every night I throw most of it out. He always picks out the summer squash to eat however. The other day I saw him scratching the ceramic tile in his cage like he was trying to dig and he has been hiding under things more than normal. Is this something females do at this age because I am not 100% certain he is a he?

I thought he was too young for brumation. I wouldn't mind doing it myself however. Just wake me up after the winter.

Generally, most BDs won't attempt to brumate during the first year of life, but this could be because most are hatched in the spring. But more & more BDs seem to be brumating younger in captivity. Pat B's (Mod) Spike went down for 3-4 months, if I'm not mistaken, at around 8 months old, along with several others on this forum alone, brumating younger. Because we control their seasons, any sudden changes in temps &/or Day/Night schedule can & may sometimes trigger their hardwired natural Brumation cycle.

Brumation is a built in self preservation cycle, for in the wild, when the seasonal temps drop, days get shorter & food is scarce. They can survive by slowing their metabolism almost down to nil, therefore not needing any nourishment during this time or the higher temps to aid in digestion, with very little weight loss, because they expend almost no energy at all.

Different BDs brumate in different ways. Some will find a hiding spot & go into what appears to be a deep sleep, that can last for a day or 2, to many months. Others will find a comfy perch, generally on the cool side, eyes open for much of the day, aware of their surroundings, but no other movement, again that can last for a few days to many months. My Arrow used to brumate yearly for 5+ months at a time. The others for shorter periods of time, if they brumated at all.

Not all BDs will brumate. Keeping the temps, Day/Night lighting schedule consistent, with little to no fluctuation & cool drafts minimal, may help reduce the instances of the Brumation cycle. Doesn't always work, but does help.

My Hoodwink went down at just about exactly 1 year, is still brumating now, two months later. His two brothers haven't. All housed under the same conditions.
