Thanks

I get mine from Great Lakes Hornworm. Red Earth Worm has them too for a little bit more than GLH has. Red Earth Worm also has silk worms and those are supposed to be real good.

You get a lot and they grow fast! The web site says there is 25 to a cup but it's more like 35-50. That's kinda why I tried to raise my own. I had these worms that in 2 weeks were so big I couldn't even feed to Dexter and since they are considered a "pest" I couldn't just let them go outside.

It's very fun to try at least once. I am actually on round two. This week I had 4 moths emerge and I have about 20 more pulpae incubating I guess you could say. If I find myself with too many worms...you will be the first one I notify! I wish I could find more info out there about raising them. I'd love to know if there was a way to cool the pulpae or the eggs so that they could hatch them when I wanted. This winter is going to be rough If I don't have hornworms for Dexter.

I also just started feeding the hornworms to Reggie and she is going nuts for them. And they ARE growing at rapid speed. How soon before they start to change? They're almost already too big now.

I find that if you don't keep them next to the tank and the lights, they grow a slower. In two weeks they are probably going to run out of the food that they came with. Once they get real big and translucent looking where you can see a blue line going down their back, that's when they are getting ready to turn and you can put them in moist soil to pupate. If kept warm, in about 3 weeks they will turn into moths. I bought a butterfly habitat for kids and kept them in there with a tomato plant and some humming bird food and just collected the eggs as I saw them. The moths will die after about 10 days. Tomato plants are toxic so you need to collect the eggs off the leaves before they turn into worms so they don't ingest any of the plant.
