I am going out of town for a day, we are only going to be gone for about 36 hours) and do not have anyone to watch Slyder. I got a timer for the lights but the the stupid thing does not work. I was thinking for this day I would put his red light on and keep it on until I got home than switch to his regular lighting system. I would not worry because I keep my house warm already but he just started to shed today so I want to keep his temps up.

I was going to make him a big salad the morning I leave and leave it in there until I go home. He normally does not eat it but it is food if he should get hungry enough to try it. He does not eat his crickets until 6pm (his choice, if it were up to me he would eat some in the morning too) but I was thinking about putting them in there before I left and he could eat them when he wanted.

I feel like a bad lizard mom and want to make sure he is ok for the short time I am gone. Any tips please.

Don't feel too bad Sandra. These things happen. I wouldn't use the red light. What kind of timer did you get? Maybe we can help get it working. If you could give us a pic of it or the same one online, we may be able to help.

Can you remind me how old Slyder is?

personaly i wouldnt leave crix in there with him to eat as and when as these little critters can cause damage to our little fellas if someone can correct me ive been told locusts dont bite and some roaches dont bite either so could be a better choice for you, we all have to leave these fellas sometimes and cant be helped, as for the big salad great idea as it is food but still nutritious but not a staple though depending on how old your beardie is wether you can leave the crix for a day.

I feel bad every time I leave any of my animals. I don't leave them often, I worry they will stress from being alone. I don't so they are never left for more then a couple of hours at a time so alone is not something they are accustom to. I feel like crazy animal lady ::)
I got him a brinks light timer. It clicks when they should turn off and on but it does not turn it enough to turn them on/off. I am not sure how old he is, I am guessing about 3-4 months old from what the guy told me but he did not really know either. I was thinking about putting his red light on there b/c the guy I got him from kept in on 24/7 and he slept ok with it. I just don't want the temps low for the whole time we are gone and the girl walking the dogs for me works and goes to school so she will not be able to turn the lights on/off when they need too.

I was not to sure about leaving the crix in there but he will not eat anything other then them and don't want him to go hungry. At his feeding time he comes down and paces up and down the side until I put them in and bumps the glass with his nose so I am worried he might hurt himself if he does not get crix. I live in a small town and do not have access to many bugs so I have to order them off the internet so I will have to order them no later then tomorrow to have them by the time we go so any ideas for some bugs I can put in there that will not hurt him that would be great.

i have had a look up about locusts as i know roaches can be quite expensive and on many of sites say they dont bite have you tried locusts before?. i try to alternate crix and locust with all mine i tell you what the locusts are gone as soon as hit the ground lol if he was a little older i would have said leave the crix for a day if he gets hungry enough he'll eat his greens but wouldnt advise it on one so young

Dubias are good to leave in there with him.(I think) I believe Janie did an experment with them to see if they would bite on dragons if they were left in there.

36 hours is fine, he'll just be hungry when you get back. Shut down all the lights if your worried about it. It'll just be like a very rainy day fro him where he can't hunt. Their built too survive short peiods of nothing lol.

Ok I will stop stressing myself and turn off his lights and just put a salad in there for the day. Just wanted to hear it from you all to put my mind at ease and thanks for making me think about it as a very rainy day.

I have to agree.. Francis is a jewel !
But then, we all have our qualities.. not just us "old timers"; new comers add so much to the quality, and fun here !

If I remember correctly Francis was the one who explained the behavior change in one beardie when he saw the female beardie as, a 16 year old boy at the playboy mansion.
