Found an injured tortoise

I was walking my sisters dog and saw a Gopher Tortoise crossing the road. Then I saw a big 24foot Uhaul truck coming so we ran up to move the tortoise. I saw he had a part of his shell that was crushed in. A guy was driving by and stopped. Together we decided that it would be best to have him checked out because it is pushed in a pretty good amount. I called my Herp vet and to my luck they rehabilitate reptile wild life. Right now he is in my bath tub. I put some turnip greens in with him. Normally I would not feed wild life but I have seen the one that lived in my yard at my other house eat them and be ok, I figured it would be fine to offer these to him too. I will post pictures of him later today.

here are some pictures of him. The pictures do not show just how bad it is but you can get the idea. It looks like it is already starting to heal but I will feel better if my vet tells me he is ok then me just decide that on my own.

I have moved him to a 50 gallon bin I have and put a heat lamp on him. He has some clear discharge from his nose. I don't know if that is stress or if he is sick, but once he gets to the vet he will get a good once over. Jordan is taking a nap but once he gets up I am taking him in. hope the little guy is ok.

Took him to my Herp vet and the shell has already started to heal itself and the discharge from his nose is stress and possible overheating. The vet said that he was lucky to have survived his injury but since has has made it to the point of healing he is at then he is going to be just fine. He was given a clean bill of health and will be released tomorrow. I want to take him to a part of the island that has less human and car traffic and that requires a lot of walking down the beach. With having Jordan that is next to impossible. Chris has off work tomorrow so in the morning we will take a trip down to the south part of the island and he can start a new life where there are no cars. There are other tortoises in the area so it is still his natural habitat and he will be happy and most important he will be safe from cars and people.

Great news! He is one lucky turtle. It sounds like he will love his new home....I bet it will be a great feeling sending him back into the wild.

I let the tortoise go today. I found a great spot where there are tons of sand dunes, wild grasses and other plants they eat. There is little human traffic and no car traffic at all. I was worried b/c he has no holes already dug for shelter and he may have to fight for territory but I think he will do great and I feel really good about the spot I found for him.

I feel really great sending him back into the wild. I can't wait to find my next injured animal/reptile. I still remember my first rescue was a rabbit. I was 10. So I have been doing this for a while and every time it feels great.
