you can purchase the cardboard egg flats online in most cases, or if you can find someone who sells eggs (not a store) that has an abundance of flats.
craigslist is also a good place to look as well.
I have grocery stores that sell 5 dozen eggs in those cardboard flats and since we're big egg eaters in this family and it's what I buy anyway, I have now started saving mine instead of what I use to do lol.

You can ask a restaurant if they have some they are getting rid of. My grocery store goes through phases where sometimes they have them and sometimes they don't.

You could also try using paper towel and toilet paper rolls.

some farm stores sell them for chickens, I used to buy them online, I also use the ones from the stores (our stores sell both cardboard and foam ones) but online will be your cheapest route, other than going to bakeries or resturants and ask them.
