Dubia colony

Okay so finally we have decided it's past time to start a dubia colony. The price to continuously order in bulk is just becoming slightly ridiculous.
We were limited on space but plan to clean out an old storage closet, hopefully this will work well to store the colony in.

So here is what we are thinking, we are just going to use an old plastic storage bin to house them in and cut air holes in the lid for ventilation. We have a ton of new egg crates to provide security for them so that shouldn't be an issue. We have a local pet store where we can purchase a dozen adults, I'm thinking we'd get 3 males and 9 females? We already have one female so that would be 10 in total.
I'm assuming we could just feed the colony the same veggies Spyra eats? We would of course remove the veggies and provide fresh ones often to prevent mold.

My biggest question has to do with heat. From the little I've read it seems they need a consistent air temp of 90-95 if I'm not mistaken. Since they will be in a closet, is there a safe way to achieve this without it potentially being a fire hazard?

We plan to get this going within the next week or two so please any feedback would be well appreciated. I welcome all comments, advice, and constructive criticism.

Welcome to the dubia colony club! I've got my little lovelies in a large tub, with ventilation holes in the side, covered in window screen. Food grade egg flats stacked on end at both sides, and a flat egg flat in the middle where I put their food. I set a plastic lid on top of a corner for the water gel. And have a thermometer/hygrometer to monitor them. My current heat source is a UTH mounted to the side, since it was the only flat surface on the tub. I covered the tub in high temo aluminum tape, stuck the UTH to it, and then taped the edges of the UTH. I still struggle with temps, and am contemplating moving them to a 40 gallon tank with a modified lid so I can use other heat sources.

I use roach chow and fresh fruit and veggies. They love oranges, and eat the heck out of carrots. I also toss in zucchini, bananas, apples, greens and other produce I have at the time. My roaches eat healthier than I do!

It takes time for the colony to establish itself, 6 to 8 weeks I believe. And good temps are totally crucial. I've probably got 50+ adults, but my production is low due to my temp issues.

I've found it beneficial to have a breeder tub, and a smaller breeder tub. I take out the babies and put them in the feeder tub until they reach the proper size to feed off. That way I disturb my breeders less frequently.

You may want to get the tub established before getting the roaches. That way you aren't trying to make modifications while they are in there, since you aren't really comfortable with them yet.

Thank you Eavlynn for all of that really good info.
I'm now thinking we may want to plan on getting more adults to start with. Other than keeping the temps correct it really doesn't sound to complicated which for my sake is a good thing lol.

I also read that I will need to have mixed sizes of smalls and mediums in there. Any clue why that would be necessary?

You don't need a ton of adults. I got a bunch of roaches from a friend of mine, and there happened to be a ton of adults in with what he gave me. So into the breeder bin they went! None of my babies are big enough for them.

You don't NEED to put other sizes in with them, but I've read that colonies with mixed sizes produce better than those without the smaller roaches. I can't confirm or deny that statement.

By observing this female we have now she seems more active when other smaller roaches are in there with her. I'm no roach whisperer haha so I'm not sure if it's actually stress and she's freaking out or maybe they just do better with "friends". Either way I guess we will plan on tossing a few mixed sizes in since it can't hurt.
I can't wait to have it up and running [emoji4]

That's really interesting. I never tested an adult's reaction to the presence of younger roaches.

We've had her for a few weeks. She watches other roaches come and go lol. I told Maddie she must feel pretty superior by now

welcome to roaches!! I wrote up a care guide it's in the general section new comer link my temps for mine are in the mid 80's I have a busy breeder bin :) love oranges (but just to the breeders not the feeders not good for beardies) yes don't disturb the main colony except to refresh food, what ever you feed to your beardie they can have as what they eat goes into your dragon.. If you see a female with her egg sac out DONT disturb her she will drop the eggs and when she can have 30 babies that's a big loss.
My info sheet should cover everything.. Oh don't throw out the frass (roach poop) the baby nymphs will eat it and hide in it.. only get rid of some when it is like 3" deep. I've had my colony for over a year and I've yet to throw out any.

Ok so we have the closet cleaned out and we are going to grab the plastic storage bin for the roaches tomorrow.
It seems our pet store only sells adult females not males. This may sound like a stupid question but giving that we are new to this I just want to be double sure, can we just simply order a few adult males? Like will any adult male work, or should we be looking for anything special before we order?

Or not haha. If you click on the 3 dots in the top right corner and select "Web view" it takes you to the regular forum. You should be able to see the link then.

Hdrydr thank you for the link. And I can not say I blame your husband for making them stay in the basement, closets should only be used out of desperation haha.

Okay guys so something interesting happened to us today. We have our plastic tub bin for our colony ready, roach food and all of that good stuff. Now we are waiting on the heating pad to arrive. we plan on testing that out before ordering the breeders.
We go to feed Spyra and notice all of these tiny little babies running around in the roach bin? Is it possible that the adult female roach we have was pregnant this entire time? All of the roaches we ordered are medium sized and I don't think mature enough to actually breed.
Should we remove the babies from the feeder bin or just leave them alone?
