Does a cork log mess up a probe thermometers readings?

I got the lights set up in my beardies new tank and everything was going well until I checked what was supposed to be the cooler spot in her basking area and it read 117?! It wasn't even hot there?? The cork log was the farthest away from her lamp but was the hottest?

I adjusted the lamps position and the highest temp is now 105. I don't get why it was reaching that high of a temp but my beardie looks happy with the current temp.

Digital probe thermometers are the most accurate --- certain materials will throw IR guns off -- so the temp you were / are getting now is more than likely correct -- it is best to use the digital probes and its good to have the IR gun as well but I would go w/ what your digital is telling you

Once you first place the probes, they need a little while to work and start getting accurate temperatures. Strange readings are normal for the first several hours.

Ive had it for a couple weeks now. It was giving some pretty weird temps in her last tank, too. I think its a accurate one though
