Hello friends. I have a 1 year old beardie that has changed his behavior in the last 3 weeks. He no longer wants anything to do with heat. He stays all day and night in the far end of his enclosure where his body is very cool to the touch. He sleeps all day and night and does not eat. I keep offering food daily and turn on and off his lights like usual. Do they go in brumation this young? He will open his eyes when I call his name but will stay in his corner and continue to sleep. No issues with him up until this point. 3 questions.... Think it's brumation? And how long does this last? How do they survive no food or water?

Thank you so much!

Hello spike welcome to the forum, Can you go over lighting and diet so we can possibly rule those out, no color bulbs! No coil bulbs. Idk if you’ve been keeping track of his weight but next time when this starts keep track of it , we need to know if hes drastically dropping grams, While he is young , in their natural habitat (Australia) they’d be brumating with the yearly temp change, so i dont think it’s to unusual, however depending on your state and weather id think everyone’s beardies would be coming out of it by now? (we have had a couple cold snaps so maybe winter isnt quite over) healthy lizards in theory can go months without food(but just cause something can doesnt mean it should) theres some debate wether people should take out their beardie and feed and interact with them when in brumation, im personally on the side of just feeding them a little something, its not hibernating its brumation, if a bug walked into their home in the wild during brumation im shure theyd take the chance to eat it, water is already tricky to get them to intake , I would not go more than 3 days without some kind if liquid wether bug guts or water, (I have heard of people giving their beardie a little gatorade when they wouldn’t drink water, idk how healthy this is so approach with caution) if he doesn’t eat or drink and this goes on for another week id advice you to take him to the vet, it is probably just brumation, but dont wait and see for further symptoms.

Hello thanks for your thoughts. No coiled lighting. No colored lights at night just a ceramic heat lamp. We live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where it's still cold and plenty of snow on the ground. Diet is collard greens or mustard greens and eats both crickets and dubia roaches with calcium coating. Roaches are his favorite so I have them shipped to me. No pet stores here. I read an article yesterday that said don't interrupt the brumation cycle as it may last longer. Let them be and check on them every couple of days to make sure they are still with us. He has been very loved and spoiled. I strongly feel his lights are fine. I'm an avid reader and educate myself on his care. He has plenty of living space also. In a 70 gal aquarium ♥️. Thank you for your response and thoughts. I do appreciate it

If husbandry is correct, this does sound like brumation. Just make sure you weigh him at the end of each week to make sure he's not dropping weight.

Don't force him to come out or eat either!

man I know I going to be freaked out the fisrt day frank goes into brumation. He is only 3 and a half months old. The thing that sucks is brumation symptoms are a lot like the symptoms of other diseases.

edit: not to worry you or anything
