Brumation?

Hi all,

I have two male beardies, Del and Rodney. They are almost 2 years old and are brothers. They are in separate vivs of course and cannot see each other.

I’m wondering if they are possibly going into brumation for the first time ever. In the last couple of weeks, they’ve both started ‘hiding’ in the cool spots in their vivs. Now, neither of them have ever been baskers anyway, they never seem to lie in the heat deliberately but they’re both definitely more subdued than usual. They are both now refusing food although Rodney did eat a few morio worms the other day (their favourite). Del is point blank refusing food.

The thing is, during the day time they don’t seem to be actually sleeping. Just lying in their hides but they’re both still awake. Rodney seems to be dozing on and off but he’s always been a lazy lump! Del would be the more active of the two but he’s been very inactive the past week. I was a bit concerned this morning so when I saw he was wide awake I took him out and laid him on my chest for a little while for a cuddle. I just put him back in there and he’s up at the glass looking slightly more alert than he has been of late but that’s obviously because I had him out. I tried him again with some food but he refused.

Are there different degrees of brumation? Do some dragons merely just slow down a bit and become less active or do they have to be actually sleeping most of the time for them to be considered brumating? I’m just concerned that if they’re not fully brumating then the process of their body system ‘suspending’ as it were is not happening so how are they going to survive without eating? I don’t want to keep disturbing them either if all they want to do is just chill and snooze! I’m quite confused as to what way to go about this. They’re both very healthy and have good body mass (Rodney more so than Del, I did mention he’s a lazy greedy guts! :)

About a year or so ago they both went through a phase of about 3 months where they each ate very little (this didn’t happen at the same time, first one went through this and then the other one did) . I was really concerned but neither seemed to be losing much weight at the time. I was feeding them apple sauce to try to get something into them but even then they’d only take a small lick of it and they’d have enough of it. They refused crickets, morios, wax worms and all kinds of veggies and fruit. They both snapped out of it though and started eating normally again. They were under a year old at the time so I didn’t think they could be brumating.

Neither of them poops a lot. They both seem to go weeks without pooping and then will do a huge one. I bath them regularly to try to get things moving and keep them hydrated but they seem to just have their own poop schedules. They don’t seem to be adversely affected by not pooping regularly. They (usually) eat normally and move about normally. Their abdomens aren’t swollen or bulging or anything and they have full movement of their back legs.

Sorry this has turned out so long, just want to make sure my little guys are okay! Thanks in advance!

Brumation is different for everyone so it's very hard to say what is normal. Brumation also mimics sicknesses so it's always good to have them checked out before they go to sleep.

My dragons are all in varying stages of wanting to brumate. One of my girls will go in her hide for a few days, sometimes I will see her with her eye open, and then she will come out and bask and eat and she spends a few days out and then goes back in her hide. My other girl went in her hide about a week ago and hasn't come out. She moves around and sometimes I see her with her eye open but she hasn't come out at all. My boy went in his hide for a week, came out and now has just been sitting on his hammock on the cool side. He has real sleepy looking eyes and he will eat but I haven't seen him really bask.

Thanks for the reply!

Since I posted, both boys have gotten a lot sleepier and seem to be going into full brumation. I’ll keep a very close eye on them!
