okay, so I've never had a bearded dragon. this is sheldon and he was my ex's but my ex decided to leave him with me and i just noticed last night his back looks black? has anyone had any experience? does this look normal?

Yep he's about to shed. Their scales will get grey and then turn whiter as they lift off. Don't pull any shed that's coming off. You can give him more freq baths to help get it loosened.
Just a side comment: How attached to the wood chips as a substrate are you?? Loose substrate can be very dangerous in many ways. just asking and offering advise. If your interested you can take a look at the links below several of our comments as we've put together info for people to get general care help..

not attached at all. there is actually some kind of tile type thing under it. ill post a picture so you can see it and tell me if thats okay. im about to clean it anyways!

I would remove all of the bark and leave it out...

there is alot to learn but we got a great group here to help.. You're going to see some weird things like nose plugs, ear "plugs" just don't pull any shed off you can help by bathing and using a soft toothbrush going in the direction of scales while in bath to help..you can carefully cut pieces IF hanging off.
Making sure your offering good bugs and good greens/veggies and supplements, good basking and UVB lighting providing proper temps your going to do just fine.
