Hi,

I came across a bottle of "Parasite flush" the other day, and was wondering is it the same stuff they use at the vets when you take your BD for their 6 monthly deworming????

The one I saw is called Parasite flush, its a Repti Med product.
20ml bottle that contains Phenbendazole and Prazqvantel (Sheesh, hope the spelling is correct, had to call the reptile shop to get the details)

I also found this on an online shop here in SA. Are they better?

If you are going to use something as a preventative, Parazap is one of the best products around. You can only get it in once place, the developer. But, it is well worth it.

your parasite flush is actually Pyrantil. Puppy wormer.
it'll work for a small outbreak of pins, unfortunately, most things just build a tolerance to it and it makes the med they really need require a stronger dosage.

use it on the bug farm instead.

When I had Pogie at the vet in March they gave me Geez his handwriting sucks big time . . . I think its proticin / protexin powder to bring home and give 1x daily for about a week... Is this a type of parasite flush also???

OK never mind seems its a Preventative thing accirding to this

Protexin soluble
A probiotic that will not only boost the immune system and protect against illness, but it will also aid in the recovery and prevention of diarrhoea.
A daily dose of good-tasting Protexin will make your pet healthier and more resistant to disease.

Protexin soluble is a palatable powder containing nine strains of beneficial organisms (bacteria, yeasts and moulds).
These micro-organisms are in a suspended form, activated when swallowed.
A live probiotic like Protexin helps to restore the microflora balance in the gut, and with it the animals' digestive efficiency and also natural defences against disease.
Protexin soluble contains live bacteria and other organisms that are scientifically cultivated, carefully dried in a special process, then coated with a substance that protects these delicate organisms from the environment.
This coating dissolves in the intestinal tract and the organisms are set free.

Use Protexin:
- When animals are under stress (change of environment, illness)
- After antibiotic therapy, to replace the beneficial bugs and speed up recovery
- For newborn animals, to establish 'good' bacteria in stomachs instead of 'bad'
- Especially for newborn or young animals separated from their mothers
- Especially during diarrhoea to stop the diarrhoea and normalise the stomach.
- When pets have 'windy' tummies!

It's very easy to use. It is very palatable and should be sprinkled once daily over food or mixed into supplements like Milko-Pup. Protexin soluble is completely free of side-effects and can be used for all species of animal including those pregnant and lactating.

Maybe I should keep giving ot to her say 2 x week as booster ????????????

Question......
I get the feeling you're concerned about a parasite?

Yes and No,

We stay very far from the reptile vet and they are really really expensive with consultations and smears and meds.....

I am also new to Beardies . . . So dont really know all the signs and symptoms of illnesses well enough yet. Since she was actually sick when I got her, I dont want her to go there again.... I beleive in being prepared, I'd rather prevent something from happening than treat it after it has happened.

Thats why I started breeding my own crickets on 31 March... The 1st batch is now approx 7mm long / 3 weeks old. So recon in about another week they will be the right size for Pogie, and by breeding my own I'll reduce the parasite risk.

Well I hope I am good now. Her poop is still very loose, doesnt smell BAD but its loose. Thinking its 'cos of all the moisture shes been getting since I've had her. No undigested cric parts, but can see the beans and butternut a bit.... Also lotsa water with it.

Previously she never got salads.... 2 crics every 2nd day, no baths, no misting.....

NOW, Daily salads with moisture rich veggies, 30-40 crics daily, weekly baths, daily mistings . . . and I mist her salads so the leaves dont welt so quickly.

Her appetite is good, and shes gaining weight and growing and isnt lethargic.

So YEAH, want to prevent illness / parasites, definately

Will the breeding of my own cricks help limit the parasite risk? They eat better than I do LOL

breeding your own crix is beneficial.........and can help you control parasites.
most people don't realize that some insects naturally carry certain little "buggies". you irradicate them in insects, the same way you irradicate them in your animals. With dewormer like the parasite flush. As younger stages of crix grow, they have less option to contract and carry, it's as they get older that the possibility broadens.
What i do is about once per month i set aside a number of "breeding" crix and feed them their normal food with just a little "spritz" of the "parasite flush" stuff on it. I buy one of those cheap 50 cent spray bottles and put the liquid in there and one spray from 12.0 inches away does the trick.

it sounds like your loose stools are most likely the result of imbalanced bacteria in the gut.
does that have Lactobacillus in it anywhere?

Protexin
does that have Lactobacillus in it anywhere?

found this link so Yes it does http://www.surveymaster.com/prod15.htm

Protexin Powder

Composition 60 x 106 CFU/g as Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Enterococcus faecium, Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus.
Actions Live microbial feed supplement (probiotic). Improves intestinal microbial balance by maintaining the digestive system, optimising digestion of feed and naturally enhancing health. Nontoxic and residue free.

Will do the parsite flush on breeding crics... Thanx.

Now If the info above helped, will a dose say 2-3 times a week help or should I go back to daily till her poop gets firmer?

daily. lemme explain.

gut flora is like a cycle. But it must have balance.

good bacteria is what you want. Parasites get involved and the meds can turn good bacteria into non existant bacteria. That just makes the tummy hurt. Then it gets complicated with bad bacteria (which also exists in the system) and you get the "upside down" effect.

So when you dose with a probiotic, you attempt to balance out the good vs. the bad bacteria. if you go at that "hit and miss" you'll never get it balanced. To begin it, and continue for a peroid of 2 weeks helps to stabilize the good flora so that the bad bacteria can't run amuck.

Val is pretty good about shipping. It's worth a shot emailing to see what it would cost to ship.
