I live in an apartment and am thinking of getting a bearded dragon. Hopefully the type that maxes at 14in. I was wondering if anyone else whom has 1 and lives in an apartment has had any problems with the management for keep this type of pet? Did you have to pay a pet deposit? For my birds I did not.

I live in an apt (coop technically) but I rent so it's an apt for me.

My "land lord" said no dogs; never mentioned anything about reptiles; however all management is different.

I would ask your direct landlord for their animal policy.

They can and will come into your apt for certain tasks and you can get into trouble if reptiles are forbidden.

Always check before doing anything so you don't end up with a headache down the road....after investing in all the equipment and your reptilian pal; just to get told to get rid of it later.

Well I got gerbils and nothing was said about them. I have been at my current apartment for 6yrs though. Gotten tired of dealing with litter for the gerbil for I am a bit allergic to it.

My apartment complex doesn't allow reptiles, and when I tried to bring them in without mentioning them (because I genuinely didn't think it would be an issue) I got in big trouble and had to move them out immediately.

I also know of someone who was looking for an apartment and a couple landlords wouldn't let her have her bearded dragon because of the fact that it are bugs, they just didn't want the bugs in the apartment.

Well I will probably be moving in 2 years. Thus I think it best to wait until I move to get a bearded dragon.

Can they not eat dried bugs?

I live in an apartment we are the only ones that are allowed pets and we had 3 cats when we moved in. We got Dexter and didn't say anything. When the landlord found out he was okay. He thought she was cool and saw she stayed in her tank. He said as long as I don't get snakes he's okay. Now we have 3 bearded dragons a chameleon and 6 frogs!

You never let them out? What size is their enclosure. What are you using for their encloser?

Oh God no, they are out ALL the time LOL. Just happens when he comes down they are in their tanks! I have 36x18x18 ExoTerra's on a shelf unit so they are stacked. We have a two bedroom so one of our bedrooms is the reptile room.

So how to keep the room clean? Do they leave a big mess everywhere?

They are out when we are home. When we aren't home they are in their tanks. We have two rooms that are safe where they can't get lost under anything or get stuck somewhere. We also don't take them out unless they've pooped because we don't want them going on the carpet.

You just get used to your dragon's bowel habits after time. I know my Izzy likes to go in the late morning after she's warmed up so that's when I do her bath. and after time I've learned that she only goes 1 time that day..

That is very interesting. Seems that a bearded dragon would be less smelly than my gerbil.

Nope, if your bearded dragon has parasites it's going to have stinky poo and sometimes if they walk through their poop and get liquid on them, you bearded dragon itself will smell until you give it a bath.

Like Hdrydr31 said, you will start to learn your dragons habits and know when it's okay to take the out or when you should leave them in their tank.

If ur worried about a odor I would recommend not getting any animals as pets

They don't smell much as long as u keep the tank clean and them clean. Mine poops once a day and after that I will let her out to run around for a little bit (I have carpet and hate having to get that poo out of it).And Petco has cleaning sprays that deodorizes and cleans everything. I use it on the tank, everything in tank, and carpet. And be sure to clean the tank and wash the carpet (if u decide to use that) once a week and always pick up poop every day (the poop stinks but not as bad as gerbil pee)And I agree that u should ask your land lord before u bring in any new animal. If u don't u may be breaking your lease. And it's awesome that u are interested in adopting an adult. Glad to have u here and if u have questions about anything just ask. A lot of helpfull people here :)

Just trying to understand the odor the bearded dragons have because I have allergies. For my gerbil's odor I got complete litter and Bath sand to mask the smell. I am more allergic to the litter than the smell from the gerbil.

I don't remember saying anywhere that I was going to adopt an adult. I was thinking it would be easier to get an adult though for the young consume more bugs. Concerned about the cost of the bugs. Still researching the cost of worms. Crickets found you have to have a little house for them and then buy food for them. Worms less of a hassle it seems.
