Hunter's basking bulb burnt out this morning when I turned it on, I've only had it for a month! What brand/kind of basking lights to u recommend? She is in a 40 gallon breeder tank and she can get high up and close to the bulb!

It's hit or miss and I really don't understand it. You just have to get a couple wattages and see what works. I would start with a 65 and then go the next higher.

I have a 65 watt in Dexter's tank, her basking spot is about 12 inches from the light and the temps are perfect. Luci's has the same exact bulb and he is about 7 inches from the light and the temp is right on. I can't wrap my head around why they are the same even though Luci is closer to the light. I changed gauges and batteries, still the same reading. The only thing I can think of is the placement of their tanks. Luci is closer to the floor, closer to the heat vent. Dexter is higher up.

if thier basking spots are made of different material, one could retain heat better

For sure! I was also thinking that it's possible that one of the tanks holds the heat in more. Different tops maybe? I definitely agree with you though cody. I'm still trying to figure this all out, lol.
