Hiya.!

Okay so I recently introduced myself and Zilla (my 15 mo BD) in a previous post. I adopted them a couple of days ago now and there has been a couple of issues with the viv, lighting ect (which has been rectified). The previous owner had no hide for them to go into, and as far as I'm aware they have never gone into brumation yet. Zilla has been hiding and sleeping quite a lot in their new hide recently and wondered if this was them brumating.? The uvb light and basking bulb are all fine, as well as the temperatures being correct.

Thank you

Ive found that brumation is kinda a taboo subject, first of all brumation isnt hibernation, similar but not the same, from what I understand its kinda what hummingbirds do at night in really cold places,(basically they slow down their bodies to a meditation state) some people will say “oh if ur tanks temps were right he wouldn’t need to brumate” , which i dont think is a 100% acurate or fair, and other people say “you shouldn’t feed your dragon when they brumate, theres alot of opinion out there , and i think thats where the problem there in lies, id have a weight cart going, keep dates and times , i think a bd should be fed during brumation (if they take the food that is) , if they were sleeping in the wild and a random bug walked into their home i think they would chow down, since we all are in the winter months of most of the world especially where you live i think its a good possibility , all you need to worry about is if he starts black bearding and loseing weight, I personally haven’t had experience with brumation with any of the lizards ive owned before, so i cant say 100% ur guy is or isnt , i do think he should be left alone though (only take him out to weigh him) dont force food , (he can go some time without food so dont be alarmed if ge doesn’t eat , make shure he acess to veggie he might not want bugs either) some days he might come out and bask other days he might go back on and hide, beardies are very hard to figure out and peg whats goin on with them , just be vigilant and monitor him if any new symptoms develop. Great advice from SkyBug above, and worth considering too your beardie may just be going through some relocation stress from the move and the change of environment. If you are certain everything is sufficient regarding UVA/UVB and temps etc, just allow them to settle in, keep providing what you need to and give them time. Weighing them is a very good idea x
