Ace is Licking calcium powder from his rock.

Today when I fed Ace his crickets he did something odd. I took six mini crickets, put them in a bag and dusted them with calcium powder. I then dumped the bag over into his viv. The crickets landed on his basking rock and the leftover calcium powder sprinkled the rock. He hunted, chased down and ate his crickets. Then for the last few hours since I fed him he has stayed at his rock and licked the calcium powder off of his rock. He was trying so hard to get it all that I decided to put a little bit more on the rock and he went crazy like a kid at Halloween time. He seemed frustrated that he couldn't get it faster! Why on earth would he do this? Is this normal? It seems weird to me. His crickets are dusted at least five days per week. He gets fed six minis in the morning and another six at night. (He is almost 9 weeks old.) I also put a little calcium dust on his salads. I don't think he is lacking in calcium in his diet.

I'm sure hes just use to it cuz you dust the cricket he probably associates the dust with cricket.

wow, that's not many. Yoda was 5 1/2 inches when l got him and he was eating anywhere up to 30 to 40 cricket morning and night. As well as a few teaspoons of greens.

Watch he doesn't have too much calcium - which can be as bad as having no enough..What greens are you offering and how much?

Really 30-40 crickets twice a day? He is so small that after he has eaten the six his body looks very round. The crickets are the smallest my local pet store offers and they are between 3/4 in and 1 inch long. I give him chopped kale in the morning, approx. 2 tablespoons. I have offered him other veggies ( mint leaves, radish greens, red leaf lettuce, cucumber, cooked zucchini, banana, and a little bit of apple) he tastes them and leaves them. He doesn't eat a lot of the Kale either. Maybe a third of what I offer. He loves his crickets! I just haven't wanted to overfeed him. He looks like he might pop sometimes. I got him on August 5th and he has grown 1 and 3/4 inches in that time. He is alert and moves around well. He seems healthy. I give him a few meal worms every few days. He eats them but not like he goes for crickets.
I will try giving him more crickets and see how he does.

i wouldn't offer him any meal worms as there is a cjhance of impaction. Red lettuce isn't really good for them. and the other things you have mentioned should be feed occasionally. Dandelions are great and can bne fed everyday, and they love them, endive is great. Here is the "bible" i use http://carolinadesignerdragons.com/common/docs/food_list.pdf
Yoda has slowed down on his crickets but l have up'd him to the next size. He now has between 10-15 medium sized morning and night. Plus his greens and flowers. I use mainly dandelions and endive as a base and swap everything else. Yoda has things like apple and carrot every 10 days. Carrot greens and beetroot greens are great, as is bok choy and celery(leaves and stems)

you shouldn't feed crickets that are are bigger than the space between there eye's. If your beardie is very young, then as lizardlover says, minis (small in australia) are tiny and that's why l said i was feeding up to40 twice a day. They are smaller than my little finger nail. In Aussie, the ones i was buying, it says minimum of 50 per box. I would say most times there was at least 80-90.

I have only ever purchased crickets from one pet store. They offer what they call "minis and regulars." I always go with the "Minis" because they are the smallest they have. I didn't realize they could be even smaller. I just used a measuring tape and measured our crickets. Some are as small as 1/2 inch, but the majority are 3/4 inch. I know about the between the space of eyes sizing but when I bring home the crickets the size varies in them so much. He eats them easily and doesn't seem troubled. Today I put 20 in the tank and he ate 13 in a ten minute period. Lizard lover, my crickets look very similar to the ones pictured with the quarter, perhaps a tiny bit bigger.

Do you feed him the entire dandelion including the flower, or just the greens?

both, greens and flowers. My kids go pick them from the lawn. I'm actually in the process of making a beardie garden - meaning everything in the garden will be safe for bearded dragons.
2 reasons, 1 - i can go send the kids out to get Yoda's meals, they love being invloved and helping. 2- when l'm out gardening or whatever i can bring yoda out and he can have outdoor time.
I have an old birdcage that l've taken the bottom off, and l can use that to keep yoda safe from cats and things.

Nat: I get what you mean about the dust. My guy will eat his vitamin powder (w/calcium) straight off the plastic spoon I use for scooping out his superworms (which by the way he will NOT eat unless they are dusted)! He totally turns up his nose when I put them down w/o dust. Even if I dust them ever so slightly, he'll eat as many as I'll give! I assume he is associating the dust with his favoriate food. Part of me thinks he doesn't recognize them without the dust!!! Its like a kid who waits for the ranch dressing before they'll eat raw broccoli or the ketchup before they'll eat the fries (a/k/a "chips" for our UK friends) - lol.

Good luck w/the salad.

Cheers

Ranch dressing is a white salad dressing, (everything dressing) For humans. That is made of herbs and spices, mayonnaise and milk. My kids asked me the other day why we don't put Ranch dressing on Ace's salads. My six year old son says "It would make it taste a lot better!"

Ajandj: Ranch dressing is a salad dressing that 90% of American kids love. Its how most mothers get their kids to eat raw veggies when they are toddlers. You simply can't go to a picnic or a party here without seeing a large plate of raw veggies (broccoli, carrots, celery, etc.) that has a small bowl of Ranch dressing in the middle of it which is used for dipping. The dressing is a sweet, white, thick, creamy necessity for any green salad you expect a child under 10 to eat.

I know people (adults) who put the stuff on all kinds of things, like baked potatoes, crisps (potato chips for us in the US), BBQ chicken wings, hamburgers, ham sandwiches, etc.

Its made w/buttermilk, egg yolks, sugar, garlic salt and herbs. If u can ever find any in your travels, u should try it!

yes there is marmite but it is terrible (IMO). Vegemite is.... well... you either like it or you don't. It used to be extremely high in salt but they have changed that now. It has changed the flavour but l still love it, my kids love it but my hubby hates it. It is like tar and it would come into the savoury flavour l guess. I love it on toast with a drop (and l mean a drop) of honey, then you have the real sweet and savoury thing happeneing.
