Yesterday I was at petco and saw a clearly injured dragon. I made a fuss on the forums about the cruel conditions ( http://www.beardeddragonforum.com/threads/cruel-and-inhumane.10675/ )
Today I went by petco to take this little dragon home and give her a better life. The staff was incredibly helpful that is until I told them I needed to talk to the manager about the bearded dragon, after that the staff immediately became cold and rude. I was there for an hour before I saw the manager. Non of the staff would tell me anything, my patients was wearing thin. Luckily I got out of there only paying 14 dollars for the little dragon and making a quick trip home.
I brought her home, introduced her to my dragon Kanunu, gave her a nice warm bath and put her in her new home. She gets around really well for how extreme her condition is, way better than I was expecting.
She isn't able to catch her food (super worms, which don't move very quickly) so I have to hand feed her, she isn't able to get to her basking branch without difficulty and stumbling down a couple steps. I have to assist her.
When feeding her it seemed like she hadn't eaten in days she was scarfing down every worm and leaf I gave her. The petstore told me that the dragon was eating well, but they had her in isolation for that one night, I quickly noticed that when I put down a food dish in the tank with Kanunu, the dragon wasn't able to eat because Kanunu (1/2 the size of the dragon) would climb over her and eat it before she could even lean her head into the bowl. This dragon was in a tank at the petstore with at least 5 other dragons, which means she probably wasn't getting even close to enough food.
I am happy to tell everyone that this little dragon is in a nice big 60gallon tank, accompanied by a younger non aggressive dragon, they get baths 3-4 times a week, get to bask in the nice Nevada sun and they get hand fed 3 times a day.
I am not sure on the sex of this dragon, it looks like a female but she is contorted so much its just really hard to tell. I checked with a flash light and by lifting her tail. In my best judgment I'd say she is a female.
Questions
What is the best alternative heat source to a basking lamp? Something she doesn't need to climb up.
She has a very bad odor even after I let her soak in a warm bath. Is this common? Kanunu never smelled.
Does anyone have name suggestions, she has kind loving eyes and is very adventurous?
Are there other ways to determine the sex?
Thank you for listening to my concerns! Your comment and suggestions are very helpful. Stay tuned for more posts and updates about my new little dragon, she is starting Chiropractic treatment next week.
