I doubt that in 2 months he could have developed MBD but I'm no expert in that. Honestly on the feeding they are really really picky eaters. Mine won't eat all the time either. I've had her for 3 almost 4 years. There's no answer on if it could die from its past. Just make today day one and...
My suggestion is to research and do it right for now on. Maybe start him with a warm soak then let him bask and try feeding different options. They are picky. You can't really reverse what happened. How long have you had him?
