I know some people hate using paper towels, because really it looks so trashy, but I tried a desert carpet and I had no idea how it would be even remotely possible to keep it clean. Hagrid sort of seemed to like it, and it would likely be good for his nails but I threw it out within about a week and a half. The stuff started coming loose too so not worth it in that regard either. I got 2 in order to be able to switch them out frequently, maybe even daily, but I realized quickly it was not something I was liking. Thankfully I got it cheap. I kept the other piece to try when he is in a bigger vivarium. Now he mostly goes to the bathroom in his pool so if things stay that way it might work to have in part of his tank. I also quickly learned it was easier to clean up on uneven surfaces after it dries out some. That rarely happens because I am home most of the time and I just clean it up as soon as I notice he's gone. Like you would with a kid in a diaper. Though I'd tend to think the smell would get pretty icky pretty quick since it would be hard to clean off the dried stuff thoroughly and it will probably soak into the base of the carpet or the plastic fibers before you can get it thoroughly cleaned.

I'd LOVE to try bioactive vivarium but my hubby is dead set against it as of right now.
