So here's the story. My dad bought an 85gallon fish tank several years ago without my mom knowing for a salt water fish aquarium. Life happened and the aquarium never did. But, my baby needed a new home so now he's king of this massive tank and loving every inch of it!

That's real nice. Two things to watch for, because the tank is high, you want to monitor your temps and make sure the light is reaching your basking spot. Also, are you using a MVB bulb? What are you using for UVB?

So are you using a MVB? I don't see a UVB fixture..What are your temps holding at in there?? that's a big space to heat with just those 2 fixtures from your picture.

temps are great! He's very happy.
Ok, glad he's happy I don't question that I love the tank he's a lucky dragon.. I ask out of curiosity and also out of educational purposes for others that read thru the posts, as we are getting more and more people that are going for large viv's and run into lighting and heating problems..
However if you don't wish to share that's fine just explaining why the question is asked on what lighting your using.

I can't remember off the top of my head what watt my UVB is, but I figured out what watt I needed by turning off the heat lamp so I could see how broad the UVB would spread and then I use a 150 watt bulb for the basking side because the tank is so deep, it's hard to get anything up close to it so he can get close to the heat. He higher watt helps the heat get deeper in the tank. So sorry! I misunderstood why you asked! Totally my bad!

So you are using a 150 watt mercury vapor bulb for UVB? There's nothing wrong with that if that's what you are using, lots of people use that kind of bulb and have success. The bulbs that aren't good are cool bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs.

No I only buy the recommended brands from a pet store.

My male Simon isn't thrilled with being outside but he tolerates it for a short time.

I just re read my answer above. I meant to say coil bulbs not cool bulbs, LOL! Coils are bad.

I heard that! They also don't fit in the fixtures very well so I don't know who would want that.
