He's banging a lot

Hi,

My beardie not too long ago, maybe 2 weeks ago, woke up from his brumation.

He broke. Very badly.

Every day, for hours with no end he'll keep banging, throwing himself, and scratching at the door. His beard will go all black, then he'll climb up his favorite wood piece and start bobbing his head for a bit. He'll also occasionally jump and throw himself at the vivs walls...

I'm not sure why he does that. He'll start banging at it at different times, be it 9am or 11am or even 1pm. It's incredibely frustrating.

Even if I wanted to throw him out so he can cruise about, I can't. It's incredibely cold in the house, and we can't afford to keep the heating on constantly. He would go into hiding to sleep anyways. Like he did today, and had to wait for him to come out as I couldn't find him anywhere.

I've lost my job not too long ago, but if I still had it I'd get him a 5x2x2' to upgrade him from his 4x2x2 ASAP.

Melon has many branches and woods to climb (he doesn't really unless for uvb).
His uvb has been changed this year, it's a 10% one. I use dhp with him, temp kept at 38 Celsius day and night (room gets super cold at nights).

I've had my bioactive terrarium and tortoise for a while. Tort lives underneath Melons viv.
Even if I let Melon out, he'll start banging at either od the cages anyways.

It's incredibely annoying.
Is there anything I'm missing out on?

Please don't attack me for not being an expert :/

It sounds like hes doing a mating thing w/ the head bobbing etc -- your 4x2x2 tank is big enough-- the UVB should be changed out every 10-11 months and I would get a 24 watt bulb are you using a Reptisun bulb or the Arcadia fixture - if hes climbing to the top of the branches to get to the UVB is it on top of screen or in the tank? It should be in your tank and distance should be approx 12-15 inches -- dragons like cool and dark when sleeping the tank should not be kept at 100 F all night - what is the temp in the house at night- if your tank is falling below 65 F at night your dhp would need to be used -- are you using a solid clear bright white basking bulb for basking? dhp's are good for getting temps up in the tank and night use but not for basking- they do not provide UVA and the dragon needs UVA and that would be provided by the basking bulb -- you dont want off white or colored or daytime bulbs or yellowish bulbs for basking

Hi,

Yoy might be right with the mating thing. It makes me think otherwise as he'll bang for a bit, and if I don't let him out he will bob his head. In protest I guess? Lol

Sorry, yes I'm using Arcadia fixture and it's 24watts. It is mounted inside as the viv is wooden (mfc), and distance is correct as you said.

The UVB light provides UVB and UVA, the dhp gives out IR-A and B which both create IR-C. Or am I misunderstanding?

We've been using coconut oil for his blocked pores, but not seeing progress. Does it actually work or am I using it wrong? I do smear it on the plugs.

Please get a bright white basking bulb - I dont know anything about IR A or C as I have never heard of it - the UVB is not providing enough UVA - I have had dragons die from just being under ceramic heat emitters as they cannot produce hot enough temps to start digestion - the dhp is a heat projector correct? As far as the coconut oil that is what I use on my dragons both males and I goop it on enough to soften the pores then when they are soft I gently squeeze the pores the wax will shoot out of there

Okay. Which brand and wattage lamp would you recommend me to get?
Do you think it is the UVA lack that's causing him to do all this?
Oh I see, I'll keep trying.

Yes, DHP is Deep Heat Projector.

Your digital probe thermometers are going to tell you what wattage -- surface basking temps for an adult 95-100 Flukers basking bulb ordered on line from Walmart- do a search on their website I would start w/ 100 watt and go from there -- I am not sure about the head banging thing is he glass surfing the front of the tank? But he needs that solid clear bright white bulb you can also look at Exo Terra Intense or Arcadia Halogen

95-100 F basking temps for an adult?

I think 100w would be perfect, the viv is only 60cm high.

Yeah, he'll be glass surfing, banging and scratching at it. He'll also jump and scratch at other walls within the viv. It's super annoying as he'll do that every day for hours with no end.

And lamps like these are perfect?:

I do use the intense one with my Greek tort, he loves roasting underneath it. Just not sure how it'd be for a beardie.

I'm not sure if I can get a new lamp right now, but I'll see if I can cook something up.

Those are all good basking lights- you dont want it any closer than 6" and temps 95-100 F for surface basking temps -- around 100 ambient -- 24" high is good --- is the Arcadia UVB in the tank ? Is he coming out of brumation if so this is normal behavior for a dragon -- how big is the tank all together?

Ok, I'll get either one of the lamps then and adjust temperature.

Yes, the UVB is inside.
He came out of brumation not too long ago, and he immediately went to banging. He does that every year, daily with no end until he goes back to brumation.

Viv is 4x2x2 feet, so I think that's 120 gallons.

yes and his tank is big enough for him -- mine does the same thing glass surfing in the months of end of Jan into Feb but he only does it for maybe a month then stops - he will stop if I get him out for around 2 hrs tho - we call that spring fever but yours should not be doing that all thru summer etc --------- do you have any colored bulbs in the tank?

No, there isn't any coloured bulbs in. I absolutely despise them. Unless it's a yellow light basking lamp, but that's a different story.

I just want him to stop banging... It's beyond annoying.. And it's too cold to let him cruise about..

Basking light is Arcadias Deep Heat Projector, as mentioned already a few times.

The Exo Terra Intense light you recommendes is yellow coloured.

I haven't yet.

The heat projector is good for sick dragons and getting temps to what they need to be - the exo terra intense is good for basking that is your UVA light that he needs - w/ that projector your using what are the temps inside the tank? You want a middle of tank around 90's cool side 80ish- hot side around 100 ambient - I want to rule out all lighting and temps to see if this is cause- this kind of behavior would cause all the head banging etc- any black bearding?

I see, I'll get the exo terra intense then.

Yep, temps are within the correct range.

His beard was going black for first week of banging, I haven't seen it since.

Make sure your getting surface basking temps w / the digital probe thermometer when changing out the basking lamp -- you dont want to burn him up
