Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum. I am in desperate need of some advise!
I'm not new to reptiles I'm personally just unfamiliar with bearded dragons. My girlfriend's sister bought herself a bearded dragon maybe 5 months ago and she believes he's approximately 7 months old. He's in my opinion very skinny barely eats and doesn't have very much mobility at all. I've notice he has tremor (he shakes when he tries to move). He can't hold his tail up on his own and when you move his legs they kinda flop (no muscle strength). He can lift his head but not very much. On the drive home we had him looking out the window. He seemed very reactive to cars and seemed very stimulated. We plan on having him out daily getting socialized. I also tried to just move all his fingers and hands to help him get some extra blood flowing hoping physio therapy type movements my help his muscles and joints from becoming too stiff. ( Pictures below)

After several visits and hard conversations we managed to convince her sister to allow us to take Dart into our care and help him out as much as we can.

Steps I've taken :

I have made several calls and waiting for responses from vets.

Blended: water, super worms, crickets, wax worms, lettuce, carrots, cucumber, apple and strawberries (I realize a lot of these items aren't daily items he should be consuming. I will be going to the store tomorrow to buy all the recommended daily items to blend up until he's strong enough to eat them.) liquid calcium, zoomed powdered multi vitamin. Served with syringe will start doing 1/2 - 1 tbs per meal approximately 4 times a day to keep hydrated.

Soaked in warm water +zoo med electrolytes + zoo med reptisafe

This is the fist night, we have him. Plan on posting updates as well as show progress on the way. I'm nervous I am too late and I am too inexperienced to handle this situation but I will do everything in my power to save this little man.

As I said this was a last minute to bring him home last night, so I have yet to go to the grocery store to get him greens. I gave what I could because I know he wasn't properly fed and I knew anything was better than nothing. At this point he is very dehydrated so the extra water may be beneficial. And not doing big amount very small amounts to slowly get his body used to it. I will be going to properly stock up on the necessities today!

As for lighting it isn't a coil bulb, it's a UVB 100 Watts (added picture). I also ordered a temp gun online should be in tomorrow so i'll update the exact temps tomorrow. I'll also take his temperature, he should be around 90-95 F to help with his digestion is that correct?

Any other suggestions on helping him out?

Ok so I just realized the 100 watt is a All in One - how far is the distance from the bulb to the basking decor ? It should be 12" --- tell me what it is

I still went out to my local pet shop and bought a new light. I don't know when the last time the light was replaced and I know it's supposed to be changed every 6 months. Thought it was better to be safe.

I received the thermometer so I have a bunch of pictures to take a look at.

Also the light is about 12'' from his basking area that is making its way up to the 100's

Gonna log his improvements. Feel free to make suggestions at any point to help me make improvements. Switched to Kale and squash along with the worms and crickets into blend until he can eat on his own. He also has fresh squash and kale if he chooses to snack through out the day.

Dart's measurements : 03/22/2020
Length: 14 '' Inches
Weight: 91 grams
Age: 7 months

Ok the bulb you had before please tell me what distance it was at --- please dont use the Solar Glo take it back ---- the one you had can be used but it must be placed above the tank on a stand w/ NO mesh --- 12" from basking decor ---------- the digital thermometer you got does it have a probe ? You need one w/ a probe ---- it needs to sit on his basking area for 10 minutes to get a accurate temp --- if you haft to use clamps for the All in One to put on the side of the tank but personally I would get a stand and hang above the tank

The one I previously had when I looked at the store doesn't have any UVB it only has UVA so I didn't think it would be good enough. It's been also in use for over 6 months, it needs to be changed no matter what. Whereas, the one I purchased shows high UVB as well as heat and isn't a coil bulb. But you believe it's best to go back to the UVA only? The light isn't touching the cage the light is suspended from the wall and 12" from the basking area.

The digital thermometer is from zoomed. The ratings and reviews seemed like it was the better one so based on that I went with this one.

Personally I would change the whole thing out to a tube -- here is a website www.pangeareptiles.com get rid of the All In One --- it makes it so much easier to deal w/ the UVB and heat separately --- get this from pangea please it will cost around $66 w/ shipping --- the T 5 can sit on top of the screen but I need to know what kind of screen you have is it a fine mesh like a screen door or a wide holed screen? then we are going to talk about a bright white basking bulb

these are the best on the market at this time ---

Going to take a look now. Didn't see this before I responded.

After comparing both and looking at reviews seems like they aren't that far off in comparison and a lot of people are happy with the results the light I bought provides. Yes the one you showed had a better rating, but I will be getting this shipped from out of the country. Which unfortunately at this time means it will get quarantined and won't get it until who knows when. I rather have some UVB on him because you were correct the one I previously had didn't provide any UVB only UVA. Seems to already be helping his recovery!

You should use a UVB light and dust his food with calcium dust that is made for reptiles as he may have MBD mebatabloic bone disease if he has MBD try to get hold of a specialist vet and they can give you dust with D3 in it and for the lack of muscle mass try live food and remember to sprinkle them with calci dust I can show you photos of dust and theUVB bulb I use

Hi there,
I'm sorry to hear this about little Dart! Kale is not the best thing to feed actually, yes it does have high levels of calcium but with the high amounts of oxalates too it can prevent calcium absorption. So it's best to feed it in small quantities.
The Beautiful bearded dragon food chart is an excellent resource I use it very often.

Now I was wondering I couldn't tell if the lid was glass or not but I wanted to let you know that glass blocks heat, UVB, ect.
Next when I got my Reptisun UVB I was able to order through my local pet store. I don't know what your situation is but I hope this helps. Also if you are able to find this bulb I recommend the T5 UVB bulb it will make it easier for Dart to absorb the UVB.
On the vets make sure they are exotic vets that they have experience. It took me quite a while to find a vet who was experienced with reptiles. If you don't feel comfortable with a vet you don't have to go back. I think we've been to 5 different vets before we found one who knew what they were talking about and had experience. From what you have said above sounds like MBD. Does he have rubber jaw? It looked like he might, possibly from the pictures. When you are able to take him to the vet I would recommend a full blood work-up. The vet should/will probably recommend Calcium Gluconate injections for Dart, just FYI.
I hope this helps!

The first and biggest mistake I see here is the use of a compact uvb source which is a common mistake however you will need a T5 tube light spanning 3/4's of your enclosure to make sure the dragon is getting accurate uvb exposure along with this add a heat bulb without Uvb as your heat source. You might also want to get calcium without D3. It can be found on chewy.com or even Amazon. Dragons tend to have many issues with taking calcium with D3. Because they already make the D3 neccessary for breaking down calcium. A multi-vitamin powder atleast once a week would be good for him/her. And I would suggest a vet to check for any parasites and along with it metabolic bone disease. This is all I can think of of hand if you continue to have issues I'd love to help any way I can

Thank you for all the great feedback. I really appreciate it, haven't been very active online just been really busy with work. The UVB bulb has most definitely made a world of difference!! He has more energy has more mobility and strength than he did before. I have been gradually increasing his meals he weighed 91 grams he is now at 101 grams!! Making progress guys. I have him out daily for little therapy sessions really want him to have more strength in his arms. Seems to slowly but surely making his way back to health. Can't thank everyone enough :)
