Believe it or not, we never had any major issues with snakes around our house. Which was really surprising considering we lived in the middle of the desert on like 5 acres. Maybe it was because of the road runners? lol

I get frozen rodents so I don't have to feel so bad about feeding them off. I wouldn't mind having a pet rat, but with cats and snakes, it's probably not the best idea haha.

I had a nightmare as a kid that my kittens were in a snake tank I felt the panic. Horrible

I've kept and bred rats in the past. They are the freaking coolest. Such sweet critters.

I'll also be breeding show quality mice. I kind of got myself hooked on them. The genetics are fun.

It definitely won't be easy to do, but in the end I'll know that my cats have the best food available, and the mice are cared for well (with lots of fun toys and good food) and culled humanely beforehand.

Those mice are too cute for me to be able to use as feeders. I don't think I could do it.

They are adorable. These will be breeders, though. :)

We have white rats. I have read that mother cats will teach their kittens that mice you can kill. Rats and really don't bother. We used to put rats in the tub to clean their cage. A few cats would jump up to watch. The ones who went in the tub were chased out. I am serious. Sit on a rat cage as a cat? Your paws and maybe tail become toys. Territorial as all get out, you do not challenge an adult rat...a world of pain and they will escape from you.

Haha! Yeah, not sure how my cats would react to rats. They didn't see the ones I used to have (weren't allowed in that room). I do call the mouse tanks "cat TVs" though. They stare at them constantly, and occasionally softly paw at the glass. The mice just stare right back lol

I got myself super hooked. Mice now represent the majority of my collection. Some new ones I picked up today:

Two of my cats now readily eat mice. They don't get them often, so are still mainly eating cat food, but I'm closer to my goal there.

I'm working on establishing several different mice lines. One will be specifically for feeders, and will all be PEW (aka albino).

Like I said, though...I got myself hooked. I have well over 100 mice now, most of which are babies. Wanted to share some pics of some of my litters :)

They're so cute! If I had mice that looked like that, I'd have to just keep them as pets. No way could I use those cuties as feeders. I love that little Satin Angora Brindle :)

Most of the ones fed off are males from the litters (well before color comes in), since they can't be housed together. The ones in these pics are all future breeders :)

So cute! I had a pet mouse for a bit until my corn snake ended her feeding strike. Then little Chester was no more. Now she's on frozen thawed and I feel much less guilty on feeding day. If my cats weren't such holy terrors to rodents I'd be getting a satin brindle mouse from you :)

Oh man, two of mine now BEG for the mice. I made the mistake of pulling the bucks from a few litters out of the tank, dispatching them, then giving them directly to the cats. They now know where they come from lol

Wow, you actually transitioned your cats over to mice? I was wondering how that went. My cats tormented Chester, but never tried to eat him, just batted at him.

My cats beg for cat food, and go nuts for soft food. I offered some raw chicken, but my two boys were the only ones that showed any interest. I'd like to get some more oil in their diet to help with their coats. Maybe I'll get some fish oil to put on their food.

They aren't fully transitioned. Two of them will eat them, but my boy won't touch them. They still primarily eat cat food, because I am not producing enough to fully switch them.

The fish oil is great! I've used it, and the cats loved them.

Since I've been occasionally offering mice to my two girls, their coats have got better (they both have awful allergies), and I've seen a massive boost in energy. Even my girl that rarely ever plays and runs around, is doing so every day now. It is so much fun, and so hilarious, watching them run around, especially her. She only has three legs, so watching her run is VERY entertaining , haha! Man oh man, she sure can go fast with only those 3 legs!!
